is this the only "music major" forum? or is there another one with more members?

Don't get me wrong, I love this forum, but just wondering what else is out there in the internets. :)

Come to think of it, I can't remember how people discuss these things back in the 1980s1970s.... boy, am I old...

I can tell you that you might find instrument specific college discussions on the net like Tubenet for Tuba Euph, or Clarinet BBoard for clarinet and other woodwinds. Probably something similar for each instrument, I would guess.

To my knowledge, most other forums are instrument or voice specific. They may or may not proivde a complete education discussion. I am familiar with ones that focus on voice and others here know ones that deal in other instruments. Don’t know if they have more members or not though. Search for your specific instrument.

There are others for specific instruments or voice. However, as far as focusing on the college admission process and having many members who are actually parents of prospective music majors, this one is the best I have found.

There may be others, but they are not as fabulous as this board…just ask my avatar, he knows lol…seriously, there probably are other forums and discussions about college admissions, wouldn’t be surprised if there are groups on places like yahoo (if they still allow groups) or booky-face (aka facebook),but I haven’t seen it. Sites like violin.com and others dedicated to specific instruments are out there and have more specific information, but I haven’t seen anything approaching CC in terms of information and diverse viewpoints.

As far as what people did in the 1980’s and 1970’s, ya kind of did it seat of the pants, used college guides like Peterson’s (which makes me glad I wasn’t a music major, Peterson’s et al don’t have a clue), hopefully had a teacher than knew something, and prayed you made the right decision…plus it was a different world, I suspect that music training was a bit more forgiving back then, was crazy but not quite as crazy.

I was a music major in the 80’s, and luckily I knew exactly where I wanted to go to school, so I just called the school to get all the info I needed about auditioning. But if I hadn’t been sure - who knows how I would have found out more info on other schools - yikes!! And I’m also darn lucky I got into my school of choice - because it’s the only one I auditioned at - I really had no idea at the time how fortunate I was, which is a good thing - it would have made me more nervous for sure.

I’ve been around college-related internet boards a while because my oldest daughter began college in 2003. I used to have a different CC handle, but lost the password so I rejoined with this moniker in 2009. I’ve followed violinist.com and the viola list, but those are really instrument boards and only a small fraction is devoted to college discussion. For years I followed homeschool-to-college lists and gifted education lists. Music admissions did sometimes come up as a matter of course, but here is the only place were I’ve found diverse, in-depth discussion specifically on college music admissions and the music major. Interestingly, not all majors on CC have forums, and not all are helpful, IMO. The art majors forum has never been useful at all for me or my art-major daughter. I also did not find the general boards helpful for my daughter who went to an LAC. But for Music and Theater it’s been great. I’ve made a lot of real-time friends here (we even meet in the real world.)

This is the best “music major” forum. That is because there are “adults” on it who are willing to intervene when someone starts posting snarky comments. It helps keep the board informative and on-topic.

For specific instruments, there are other sites, but they are not normally geared towards the aspiring music major.

I never found any other forums as good. Gradcafe for graduate applicants, but posts aren’t that frequent. CC’s music forum is a wonderful community and some of us have made real friends online here. I also appreciate the diversity of opinion, always considerately offered.
