Is this true? Or was she just jealous?

Okay so this girl who is my friend made a comment to me today after being elected Sophomore Class President (well I haven't yet but the polls show 96% votes for me lol).

Anyways, she said "colleges don't care much about class presidents, they know its just a popularity contest anyways".

Is this true? I mean, I think I will make a good president, but I know I'll have those people who vote for me just because they think I'm "nice" or on a sports team.

What do you think?

I honestly think its what you do with it that matters. At my school, we don’t have a class president until senior year. Some presidents were great; some (elected from popularity) didn’t do crap and wasted it.
Overall, if you show that you actually made something of it, colleges will see and like that.

The general consensus probably is that it’s somewhat of a popularity contest. That being said, if you perform well and actually try to improve your school, you could use it as your EC essay. Just show colleges that you aren’t just doing it to put on an app.

(I’m probably going to use Student Council as my EC essay topic because I’m now solely in charge with running everything until we get a new adviser. Figured it’d make a good story.)

Sometimes it’s not even a popularity contest. sometimes no one runs (as it is at my school) and you just get to be president!

So, you think you’ll be a good president? Prove it.

Honestly, I do think it’s a popularity contest, because last year, we had many teams running for president and vice president. At the end, the team that won was a bit above average grade wise, and they each played one sport. But, they were very popular with the boys and girls. There were so many other teams that were smarter, and more involved than them, but I guess they weren’t popular enough.

Of course it’s mostly a popularity contest, but it’s something unique that most people don’t have to put down on your application. Also, to class presidents don’t need to be that smart, they just need to be outgoing and involved

I would say it tends to be a popularity contest.

We have the 4 positions here (Pres/VP/Treasurer/Secretary), the 6-member Prom Committee, and school board representatives from the 3 districts.

I’d say the Prom Committee is 100% a popularity contest, the rest usually are because only one or two people run and the incumbents almost always win. Nobody runs against the representatives, nobody ran against the secretary this year either.

So meh.

If colleges see that you were class president but did absolutely nothing for the school in that position, yeah, that won’t be impressive. But if they see that you were elected president and immediately organized projects, etc., that will look much better.

she was both right and jealous! although it’s a popularity contest it will you show college that you are not just another nerdy kid with no friend but a cool/smart person specialty if you do some positive thing for the school !
