I have NO instruction in Russian whatsoever, but I find myself increasingly intrigued by the culture, history, and language. I am in Spanish IV; however, I do not have any desire to pursue Spanish in college. I seem to be volleying between taking French or Russian in college. I hope to get Rosetta Stones for both of them. haha The title of this thread stems from my apprehension of trying to minor (possible double major, doubt it) in Slavic/Russian studies, a field I still do not know much about. I have heard Russian is ridiculously hard. My best friend, who is currently in French IV, is wanting to delve into Mandarin after high school. Do you think it is odd that we want to study disciplines that we would be complete beginners in? Do many college freshman start with something new as well?

You are exactly like me. No it’s not weird at all. I love Russian culture so much. My favourite authors are Russian, my favourite composers are Russian. The Russian language also sounds very beautiful to my ears.

To answer your question I suggest you take a few classes at your school, college or community college. Just to see what you’re in for and if you really want to major in it.

Also look into the culture. I can recommend you books and music and websites if you want. I can hook you up with Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, and a number of other useful language learning tools if you would like.

Well I’ve taken French, Mandarin, and spanish and I’m continuing all three as well as Hindi… I can appreciate what you’re saying =]

But you say minor… any thoughts to what major and what career you are interested in persuing?

Well, my current situation is wondering as a senior in high school whether or not to take into consideration the strength of slavic/russian studies at my list of universities during the admissions process. I think I will be starting Rosetta Stone for French next semester and hopefully will get a Russian one once I finish the French. I just love Russian literature and history. It is fascinating!! I don’t feel like I am wasting four years of high school Spanish per se because I do not think it would even equate to one year of spanish at a university. lol
