Is tipping for everything out of control?

We have a local Asian restaurant that has two robots that take orders and bring food to the table. Usually it’s tables with kids that use them.

The idea of a robot bringing me food feels surreal to me. I’m literally a bit in shock reading this!!

When we were in Japan as well at Hillsdale Mall in Bay area, we have dined at places where robots either deliver food or help trundle dishes between around the restaurant. I suspect it reduces broken dishes and worker’s comp injuries.

We picked up food at an Indian restaurant in Colorado Springs last month when we were out there on vacation. H said that it was a robot that was bringing the food. I think he said the robot was also cleaning tables? Made me wish I had gone in to bring the food

Did they ask if you wanted to leave a tip?

Reading that article left me simultaneously intrigued and uncomfortable.

I’d like to see one in action (and apparently I will soon according to the article) but at the same time I anticipate it being a teeny tiny bit creepy, too.

Interesting.

In recent year, more and more restaurants is LA have adopted that practice, as well as charging for bread and water; I refuse to pay the added %, and if it is not removed from my bill, I decrease the tip accordingly. While 4% may not seem a big deal, add it to a 20% gratuity, which in LA is often calculated on the whole bill, not the pre tax bill, and it is a lot of money.

Do you tip a plumber?

I have not.

No. We don’t tip professionals charging $200-plus an hour or their apprentices. For work crews, like the one that did our siding replacement, we always provide water and Gatorade and snacks.

We did tip an electrician who did a great job for us and we felt didn’t charge us enough.

Last Sunday, my husband called our Computer Guy with a crisis and he was so helpful we insisted on paying him more than he charged.

Not sure if others have seen this and posted (my memory falters) but today I was contributing to an old sorority sister’s Go Fund Me and almost missed that an automatic tip ($15) was being added to my donation to cover Go Fund Me’s operating costs, etc.

I was able to remove it and keep just my donation being made before submitting it to my credit card.

Shame on Go Fund Me! I like this way of donating but an auto tip is not cool.

$15 is a LOT. Wow. We have to be vigilant.

I fell for this once too.

Not Go Fund Me but another similar site, while donating to an established Maui charity… the site asked for 15%!!! Nope, no, no way.

So in ten days, I will be getting Macy’s White Glove service to remove an old mattress and box spring and set up an adjustable base and mattress. It’s a free service. I doubt it will take a long time and the only stairs are four steps to get into the house; otherwise one level.

Would tips be expected in this situation? What would be a reasonable amount? I’m thinking $10/pp assuming a crew of two.

That’s what I would do, I always tip for appliance delivery too.

D2 and I had some shopping to do at our local upscale mall on Friday so we decided to grab salads for lunch at a place that we like. D2 had fish and I had chicken on my salad and we both drank water. The total came to $34. This is a place where you order at a counter and they give you a number and bring food to your table. I did not tip. I have decided that I am not going to feel guilty if I don’t give a tip at a place like this. It is not a sit down restaurant and I’m tired of there being a default for a tip everywhere I go.

I picked up a drink from a chiller cabinet and croissant at a deli this morning and skipped the tip option on the screen.
