Is tipping for everything out of control?

Furniture

Thatā€™s ridiculous. I tip furniture or appliance delivery people when they come. Iā€™m sure the company is going to give the online tip to the correct person.

I am thinking that those retail stores should give us 5-10% discount for doing self service check out.

This is a great idea! Never going to happen of course, but we can dream.

There are several stores that are eliminating self-check-out because of the theft.

Yeah, every time I go to Walmart I think how easy it would be to steal something.

I usually use the regular check outā€¦.because I donā€™t want to see those folks lose their jobs. Sometimes the self checkout has a huge line. I donā€™t go to Walmart muchā€¦so Iā€™ll need to check whether mine have closed the self checkouts.

One grocery store near me has huge issues with theft at the self checkout lines. Another has hardly any problems because they manage them much better.

But back to tipping. I have never gotten a pop up for a tip at a self check out. So there is that!

Yes it would be easy to steal at Walmart self checkout, but I love it. I hope it doesnā€™t go away. I can scan like a champ. Iā€™m fast and I group not just like stuff together, but also how Iā€™ll put them away at home. And using the Walmart app, I just wave it and go. I get frustrated at stores where they have to do it.

No, but I constantly get the ask to round up to the next dollar for charity, which I think is annoying.

At a self checkout?

Yes, I get this at self checkout at two different supermarkets. Thanks to another thread about greediness, I no longer do that. The supermarket, or whoever gets the tax credit, not you. I donate to various charities through the year, mainly during holidays and birthdays.

Iā€™d say for the last six months or so, I almost always press Other for a tip option if itā€™s just a simple transaction. I donā€™t give 20% to the person who puts the muffin in the bag. If itā€™s something like being handed a sandwich or a coffee, I tip 0 or something small. I actually think about the level of service Iā€™ve been given. Or I use the tip cup often set up on a counter because I tend to have cash regularly. My days of feeling guilted into ridiculous tips are over.

Itā€™s interesting to me - Costco states they donā€™t have an issue with increasing theft - and show why.

I do know today, even in self check out, they verify you are the person buying.

Costco CFO: Retail theft ā€˜not a big issue for usā€™ (msn.com)

Yes. Every single time the machine asks if you want to round up and donate . It adds two steps to the checkout process, which is already slow because the scanner is on slow mode in an attempt to curb theft.

I never donate or tip because guilted. We donate via Hā€™s IRA by making Qualified Charitable Distributions.

I do contribute to our local grocery where they match a portion of your donation in September. They give you a receipt for tax deduction purposes and you can choose from a long list of participating charities.

I will donate a buck once per cycle.

I think the cashiers get incentives for donations. Which is very annoying.

But I donate once and then say, Iā€™ve already donated, thanks.

The cashiers seemed so relieved when I say sure that I suspect there is some kind of drawing for every donation they get

We are in LA County and havenā€™t encountered the identity check at self check out. However, we recently went to a Costco out of state and were surprised when the worker came up to verify our identity.

Minimum wage for fast food workers is going up to $20/hr in CA. Iā€™ve noticed more restaurants using robots to bring food to tables and kiosks for self order. All of the kiosks have tip options. Am I tipping the robot?
