<p>Hi everyone, this upcoming fall Ill be a high school senior and I was wondering if U of M has the right environment for me. I live in Michigan, don't mind living close to home and only hear good things about the school. I want to major in biology or biochemistry and Im set on applying to med school. </p>
<p>What is U of Ms biology department like? How good is it compared to other schools (big or small)?</p>
<p>One thing Im worried about if the undergraduate size is too large. Would it be harder to get research opportunities and time with professors than with a smaller institution? Is it really competitive? </p>
<p>Is there anyone who is from U of M that knows from experience?

<p>Michigan is a great choice for premed particularly if you’re planning to apply to med school.
UofM’s biology/biochem department are filled with premed students. </p>
<p>I’m not too sure what you’re looking at when asking “how good is it” but it is academically challenging and is definitely one of the top schools. </p>
<p>The classes do get quite large and you’ll have many large lectures usually accompanied by smaller discussions. However, since UofM is a large research institution students typically do not have a difficult time finding research positions and professors are usually ok with meeting students one on one to discuss course materials. I would recommend applying to a program called UROP if you get accepted from UofM. UofM premed courses are quite competitive since everyone is trying to get the top grades for med school, but it shouldn’t be anything to worry about.</p>
