is UCB student residence hall area smoke free?

my kid is very sensitive to any smoke and I would appreciate very much if any one could provide this information.

We just visited UCB campus in Cakday and found their residence halls (Unit 1-3) are co-located off campus and saw a lot homeless people around and we are very concern the safety for students. I would appreciate very much if some one could advice or information on this issue.

One more question, where to get daily drinking water for students, that is, should students to buy their drinking water from store or to buy from the dinning hall or anywhere else?

Thank you in advance to help!!

As of 1/1/14, the entire campus is tobacco free (even outdoors).

My son lived in Unit 2 his freshman year ( right next to People’s Park). He said that there are always homeless people around, but he never heard of any incident where students were being harassed or threatened.

Many drinking fountains around campus have spigots attached for easy refilling of water bottles.

There’s an area for smokers, so you’ll be bound to get whiffs of cigarette smoke from time to time.

Well, the homeless people don’t bother others too much, if they try to talk to you or beg, just ignore them. It’s a urban area, there’s bound to be homeless people… Just make sure your kid is street smart, when it’s dark don’t be walking around carefree blasting your ipod away. You just need to be cautious and you’ll be fine.

Water is super clean in NorCal, so I’ve always drank from the sink/tap (I can’t do this where I am from), but if you’re still paranoid, just buy a brita filter to filter your water.

thank you so much for your detailed information!

I think the units’ areas for smoking are also no longer there along with the new campus wide tobacco free initiative. Of course I’m sure this won’t stop certain students from smoking in their rooms, your son will just have to let them know and I’m sure they’ll be accommodating.

My freshmen year roommate had the same sensitivity to smoke and we were lucky enough to live above one of the building’s only chronic smokers (sarcasm) but once we let him know, he stopped doing it in the room.
