Is UChicago a liberal arts school?

I mentioned wanting a liberal arts school in my why uchicago essay and I don't know if I should take it out.

It is an accurate description of UChicago that it strongly believes in the liberal arts; however, if you called it a “liberal arts school”, it might sound like you want a “liberal arts college”, which Chicago is decidedly not (it’s very much a University).

Do away with the ambiguity by saying something along the lines of “I very much want to go to a school which endorses the philosophy of the liberal arts, and few colleges place a greater emphasis on this than UChicago”.

See this on the University of Chicago website for perspective on the school’s view of liberal arts: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/academics/

It’s not a liberal arts school (it’s a major research university) but liberal arts education is the core of their undergraduate education.

Aw thanks you guys. Collegeboard called it liberal arts but wikipedia never mentioned it. I was very confused!

One of UChicago’s brochures called it a “liberal arts meets research university” college … or something along those lines

The UG College at the University of Chicago provides undergraduate students a solid Liberal Arts education. The University of Chicago itself is a world class research institution. There are many more graduate students [ 12,000+] at the University of Chicago than undergraduate students [4000 +] enrolled at the College.

meloparkmom’s post is a good one. UChicago is a major university, but the College is a liberal arts institution. It’s akin to Harvard and Harvard College, Penn and Penn’s College of A & S etc., though like Harvard our college of arts and sciences is the only undergraduate college. You should want a liberal arts education if you are coming here. However, even saying “liberal arts education” rather than “liberal arts school”–both of which are technically fine–is a little vague. I would emphasize why you want a liberal arts education, and how you can get that at UChicago. This is especially important because the strength of UChicago’s liberal arts education is a major reason many people choose to attend (for good reason), and being as specific and convincing as possible will make the best case for why UChicago should admit you.

I think the key to understanding UChicago’s take on liberal arts is the Core. It’s a heavily debated, curated ‘foundation’ to your education here.

When I was an undergrad, the University of Chicago was in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest consortium with colleges like Beloit, Carleton, and Grinnell. That partnership is no more, I’m afraid, but I do think UChicago has a distinct midwestern liberal arts college flavor. to it.
