is ucla a good school for pre-meds?

guys I am soooooooooo excited I got into UCLA! woohoo!
but I heard that for someone who wants to do pre-med (like me) will have a difficult time getting into med school because of the cutthroat competition.also, am I going to be just to be just a number?any advices?opinions? thanks

Wherever you go, the competition is cutthroat. I don't personally know how UCLA compares with other schools (I'm going pre-med, too). I think what's important is to do your best ! yay! Good luck!

UCLA sends more applications to med schools each year than any other school - of course there will be competition. But I say don't worry about everyone else; competition and actively trying to hurt your peers is pathetic. Just worry about yourself and your own studies. If you really want to go to medical school, you will. Most people finally realize in college that there is more out there than just medicine or law, and decide to do something else.

at any large state school you are going to be just a number. That's how it works. If you want small classes, personal attention, faculty that makes it a point to get to know you, a large public isn't a good choice. Try a LAC. And if you're bashful or unassertive it may also cause problems at the large schools.

That doesn't mean ucla or similar schools are bad, just that it takes certain qualities to thrive. For example, recs are crucial for med school. If you just show up for classes you're going to get a lukewarm rec from a prof who never knew you, even if you do well in class. But every prof has office hours. They are there for you, every week, just waiting. Its up to you to go. When you have problems (academic, social, anything) there are people out there who can help, who want to help, but they aren't calling students asking them if they have any problems. You have to take the initiative to go to them.

thanks mikemac and everyone else who replied back.:>
