UCSB has one of the highest ranking psychology departments in the state, but sure…
Not to mention, if I hear another person talking about job prospects after undergraduate degrees, my eyes might just roll out of my head. You can get amazing jobs with bachelor degrees because the requirement for a good job is not making six figures a year with a retirement plan at 22. However, you cannot get the job that so many seem to think that they will get. You cannot get the job that your parents are bragging to the rest of the family that you will get. It does not matter if you major in Art History, Economics, or Quantum Mechanics. No organization is going to read you application and think, “You mean this business major at UCB is fresh out of college? Lets put him on the board of directors!” “Wow, this applicant has a chemical engineering degree?! Better make him our head of research!”
Will you be able to get a job in the fields that you want? Absolutely. However, do not think that you won’t be spending your time kissing asses and doing the work that your superiors don’t want to do until the time comes that they get old and tired enough to finally pass the touch. Even then they often favor those who went back to school and have something more to offer.
The fact that anyone can actually be under the impression that in this generation you are going to walk out of college without a single masters, Phd, certificate, license, or anything outside of your bachelors and think that you are not going to have to work your way up the ladder from positions that are likely not what you dreamed shows how little thought they have actually put into their future or the future of those who they are advising.
