Just got into UCSD for biochem, and I’m planning to go to med school after (assuming I even get in). I have an instate option that is about 50K cheaper. Logically, I would just go with the instate option, but it has been my dream to attend UCSD for the past two years. I visited the campus and fell in love with it. My instate option, Stony Brook University, is nice too and I took summer courses there, but I really really want to go to La Jolla. What do you guys think? Instate, which is a pretty good school, or pay the out of state tuition and attend my dream school for 200K more?
Just for reference, my parents make about 500K gross and we have the money, so no, I will not be taking out loans; I’m just asking if it’s worth it for them to spend the extra 200K on UCSD just because it’s my dream school.
Thanks.
nooooo. Just can’t see the value in the OOS fees.
Well actually, since your parents are wealthy, cost is not an issue. But IMO, you’d be better off at a good private for that kinda money. Better housing, better counseling/advising, smaller classes.
Moreover, premed at the top UC’s is intense and extremely competitive. UC’s have a LOT of gunners.
Sorry, to burst your dream bubble, but you asked.
P.S. I’d vote for Northeastern.
Do your parents have a plan for paying for medical school? Talk with them about the long range money issues. It might make better sense to stay in-state for undergrad so you have money left over for med school.
Save the money for medical school.
If you have the $$ go where u want to go!!
We don’t know how rich your parents are. An extra $150,000 means different things to a family with a net worth of $5 million than it does to someone with a net worth of $50,000.
Bumping to see how more people would see this. Thanks to those that already answered.
