is umich worth the 40,000? (or near 40,000?) for out of staters?

is umich definitely worth it?

i visited it and i didn't like it much...
but i really have no other choices, so i'm pretty much going there.
it used to be my first choice school, and i loved it when i visited it the first time, but after campus day a couple of weeks ago... my view of it changed- mainly because of the dorms-

What else didn't you like about it and what was wrong with the dorms? I haven't visited yet, but I'll see for myself on the 15th.

the dorms are small...but so are dorms in most colleges

well, mich becomes much cheaper after the first year, right?

Wait... how does it become cheaper? Do they count you as a resident or something?

i heard that after the first year they consider you a resident.

That is completely untrue. Being considered a resident of a State for tuition purposes involves several criteria, and you going there as a student is not one of them, not even after 4 years.

skittles, as far as i know only the UC system is like that.

Well, California likes being different!

oh here--we'll just have to fill out a residency application after the first year: http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/resreg.html.

It depends on the alternatives. If you come from California, Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Virgnia or Illinois and you get into your state's flagship state school, then I would say no, it is not worth paying $35,000 per year to attend Michigan. Also, if you get a good scholarship ($20,000+ from an elite private university (top 30 private research university or top 20 LAC), it is not worth paying $35,000 to attend Michigan. However, Michigan is worth paying $35,000 to attend. It is a top 15 research university, and all other research universities ranked among the top 20 cost at least as much as Michigan. If it weren't, you wouldn't have so many out-of-students attending.

By the way, if you do not think you would be happy at Michigan, go to another university, even if it is not as highly ranked. It is better to go to a local college and be happy than to go to a top university and be miserable.
