Is Umich worth the cost to an out of state student? Or would the 30k plus be better spent elsewhere.

Umich seems like an awesome school, albeit filled with elitist pricks from the look of every Umich related thread I've looked at (you know who you are), but its cost is insane.

Right now I live in VA, so I could of course get the instate cost to UVA, Vtech (William and Mary too small/close to home), so those are good.

Aside from that, I could go to, and please don't get in a hissy fit, OSU. So, what do you guys think?

Everything else I've read said that, and once again, don't get in a hissy fit, Umich gets it's reputation from its Graduate schools, not the undergraduate, so if I can shave off quite a few years of debt, that'd be nice.

But of course, if everything I've heard is wrong, well that'd be just wonderful.

Not completely true. Its undergraduate reputation is pretty solid too. As for the OOS cost, I don't think UMich is worth it, especially since you could go to UVA or VTech.

I would NEVER go to OSU though. Don't even think about that school.

Your in Virginia, I really can't see how you could justify paying 20k more per year to go to Michigan as opposed to UVa. It's not like your getting a much better/worse education at either

True, but I've lived in Virginia my ENTIRE life. UVA is like, half an hour away, and I'm worried it will have the same "clique" attitude that my High School did. I get the feeling if I don't get out of Virginia soon, I'm gonna lose my mind, and the last thing I want to do is deal with elitist driving BMW's paid for by rich parents.

And if you didn't go to Umich, would you recommend OSU? I mean, are you saying its bad academically?

By the by, I wanna do Poli Science, with the eventual goal of going into Journalism. Don't ask why I don't just do Journalism for a major.

I'd rather deal with that than pay an extra 20K for a school that is just as good as UVA.

If you're doing Political science, then don't think about OSU. Their liberal arts school isn't that good. I think that the University of Maryland would be a better choice.

Go to UVA. If you want to spend that cash, go to a school like Northwestern(since you want PoliSci/Journalism - Medill is sick, and they have quite good poli sci).

Go private if you don't want UVA, no reason to look at other publics IMO.

haha the campus is right next to downtown DC, but the campus itself isn't terribly unsafe.

Penn State has a good school newspaper, but the liberal arts school is not much better than OSU's overall, and you'd be paying more too. UNC-Chapel Hill would be a good choice, if you can get in OOS! But seriously, go to UVA if you get in. College is a lot different than high school, and even though you don't live that far away from UVA, your experience is going to be much different.

I'm not one to get over wrapped in "prestige". I'd think places would be more concerned with experience, not what school I went to, for the most part I mean. Experience experience.

That aside, I want a big school too. UVA just squeezes into what I'd consider a "big" school. Not to mention the overall city of Columbus, being the capital and all of Ohio, seems like an interesting place.

But, I'll keep looking. Any suggesting you guys wanna toss my way as far as schools go would be greatly appreciated. Just nothing excessively expensive, and like I said, I'm not getting wrapped up in prestige.

If you're looking for a big school, then Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State would be ideal for you. Out of those, Michigan has the better name. As far as experience goes, you'll have a good time at all three schools. If you're looking for the party experience, then OSU and PSU would be better choices.

I would never electively go to Ohio State, ugh, spit.
I'm at UVA right now and it is wonderful! I follow the U of M site because it is a good school and I think about graduate study, but OSU>>>No Way!. I read that you are 30" from CVL, well consider VT. It's a great school, the terrain is different there, with more of a mountain feel and weather. Yes, there is the NoVa people element that would be at UVA, what to do?
You have lots of options (I suppose, if you have great credentials). Think outside the box.

Well I'm kinda stuck in a box. And I totally accept your disgust when it comes to OSU, but I'd really prefer to see what it is you dislike about it.

What you dislike may not be a concern for me. Like how I won't consider UMD simply because I'd likely get killed on the campus. Apparently for MightyNick, that isn't a concern for him.

Since you're planning on studying political science, you should definately come to Michigan! We have one of the best polisci depts in the country, based on the rankings and my personal experience!

I don't understand this whole "public vs private" arguement. Quality is quality. Some publics, like Michigan, UVa and Cal, offer better undergraduate educations than most private universities. Michigan's peers are Cal, Columbia, Cornell, NU, Penn and UVa... As you can see, some are public and some are private.

To answer the OP, it is never worth spending $40,000+/year to attend any university when the alternative is Uva or Michigan or Cal for in-state tuition.
