We were told by our advisors that all incoming BSOS Spring students are "required" to take UNIV101. Of course, this is not set in stone, it's just a strongly recommended course for freshmen.

On one side, I don't want to take this class. And the reasons are as follows:

Feels like a waste of time(tell me if I'm wrong).
Having checked the seats, it seems like VERY few people are going to take this class. This makes me feel somewhat like a deviant.

Reasons why I might want to take this course:

Again, my BSOS advisors strongly recommended that we take this course. I don't want them to hold grudge against me if they found out I dropped it after orientation(tell me if I'm just being silly).
What if the information being presented are actually useful?
Afterall, it's an easy A right?

well, im a dual enrolled high school senior right now
and part of the requirement for the program is to enroll in a college survival/transition class like the one you have to take.

i thought the same thing u do, that it would be a waste of time. but after finishing the class, i feel that i’m much more prepared for college next year, in terms of how things are run and all that.

you say you’re taking it in the spring, if you’ve already been a fall student at MD, then maybe it won’t be so useful for you. but, i’d take it, its an easy A on your transcript :-)

Notice the word required…it means you need it to graduate.

Most colleges do it now because kids, especially at large schools and away from home tend to pull poor grades in the 1st semester. DS didn’t have to take it, but our friends daughter at another school is required, most of the class is really about how to write term papers. In some univ. the course is a full yr. Fail it 1st semester, and you have to re-take it all over again next yr as a soph. Why? Because it is required! Look at it like Econ or Psych or any other class that is required, you can’t skip it, you need it to grad.

A lot of colleges (and by colleges I mean advising departments) at Maryland require some kind of transition course. A reason that very few people will have signed up for it are 1) there aren’t as many spring admit freshman, and 2) there’s only been 2 orientations for spring students so far. Yes, it’s an easy A. You do get some good info in the class (I know a bunch of people who teach and TA the course, and most of them like their students and vice versa).

Certain majors require it–I know that ARHU requires some kind of university intro course for freshman, and ARCH requires their version of it. ENGR recommends it, but does not require it…I don’t know about the others.

It is a bit of a hassle at times but overall it’s not that bad (and hey it’s a free A). It’s required though, you only meet like twice a week and depending on who teaches it it can bee very easy or easy w/a bit of attached paperwork. Most of your grade are weekly journals which need to be submitted by the end of the week (through e-mail)…You meet some cool people too
