Hi! I was just wondering what you guys were thinking. I stressed myself out over the transferring process to get into UT, and now I’m a Kinesiology major here at UT.
My questions is, is UT really worth it? Is majoring in something here really all that better than majoring in something elsewhere? Will employers really hire me over someone who went to another school?
As I’m getting closer to graduation, with my Kinesiology degree, I find myself asking these questions, especially since w/ my degree jobs aren’t just flying around for us.
The answer to this question is completely relative to your situation. Would a degree from a different university be more reasonable for your financial situation? Could you get institutional scholarships from a different school? Is there anything about UT you consider a drawback that would be solved somewhere else? Would coursework from another school be less/more rigorous? Would you simply be happier somewhere else?
For me, UT is 100% worth it. This is the only school I wanted to be at, and I know I can get everything I need from my university. Other schools offered me much better financial aid packages and wouldn’t have been as academically stressful, but I love it here and I consider it to be an incredible university. Whether or not you agree depends on your own circumstances and values
If you’re asking if a degree from UT is better than, say, Texas State, then, yeah, I’d have to say so, but in my opinion, a degree from anywhere can’t possibly HURT your job prospects.
Good luck, wherever you decide to transfer!!
This is OMO because I have been thinking about this same question and the answer I have come up with is it depends. UT Austin has a national reputation that can help in finding jobs in other locations as well as here in Austin. The downside is the size and that you are a small fish in a big pond. My advice is to take advantage of all opportunities that they provide and try to be the best in your area of expertise. Try to stand out.
I had a niece that graduated from UT Austin a few years ago with a communication degree and a minor in Spanish. She actually lived in Columbia and Chile through the university’s program. She took several nonsatisfying jobs in other cities, Phoenix and Albuquerque, before landing a great job in Albuquerque. Her minor in Spanish and the ability to speak it got it for her. It made her stand out.
As far as her going to UT Austin, did that get her the job - no, but maybe the interview. It is a school that everybody knows. Could she have done as well by going to another school with the same degrees - maybe. But you are now at UT Austin - take advantage of what they can offer you.
You might want to look at your major, and perhaps augment that with a skills-based program at UT or another school. The data on jobs is fairly unambiguous–jobs generally chase course of study rather than which college or university you attend.
