I’m extremely conflicted. All my family, everyone and everything I love is here in Houston. I have a paid internship lined up at Williams Gas and Energy and UH is giving me more money. Is UT really worth it? If so why, please help I’m extremely conflicted. I have also already registered for classes.
Were you admitted to UT? Did you decline the offer? if so you no longer have a choice.
I have already registered for classes at UT but have been told that I can still decline. I can still go to UH.
What is the cost difference? Can you family afford it? Will you be a commuter at UH?
Sometimes it is good to get out of your comfort zone for four years if you can afford it.
UT has a fantastic reputation for engineering.
U of H is a good school also!
If the difference is just a few thousand dollars then great…go to UT. If is tens of thousands of dollars then I would say no.
What is holding you back about UT? Are you scared of venturing to a new town? Scared of the $$?
I have full rides to both but UH gives me more refund money.
Well I’m not sure of UT since everyone i love and care about is in Houston. My mom is extremely sad and borderline depressed I’m leaving and all of my closest friends are going to UH. Plus, from my experience at UT orientation a lot of people there tend to be snooby-ish compared to the more humble people at Uh. Either way i shouldn’t be in debt though .
Then money is not a factor really. I would recommend getting out of your comfort zone. I assume that you are rererring to UT Austin and not one of the UT regional campuses.
DANG…how did you get a full ride to UT?? Do you know how crazy awesome that is??? Congrats!!!
How serious are your moms mental health issues? I mean…is she like every parent and just sad you are leaving? Or does she have a diagnosed mental health illness with previous hospitalizations, etC?
Your mother may be manipulating you into staying in Houston. At some point in your life you need to get out of your cocoon. Will you turn down a job at a major engineering firm because the people there are rich and snobby?
She just gets really sad since I’m an only child. I wouldn’t go as daryas saying mental health issues, but she has diabetes so stress is really bad for her.
She’s really not, she understand UT is the better school and wants me to do what’s best. But it’s obvious she is very sad about it. It feels like I’m betraying my family for what is seemingly a college that won’t give me much more than Uh will.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Yes UT Austin, and do i really need to get out of my comfort zone so drastically?
As an engineer, I can’t stress enough how much better UT is than UH for engineering. You will find a good job MUCH easier if you are a UT graduate. Austin is only three hours or so from Houston. You can go home a lot. You need to think about your future, long-term. Look up some rankings and show your mom specifically how much better UT is. You are not “betraying” your family by going to school three hours away from home. My son went to UT, and we live in Maine! Now THAT is a long ways.
It is normal for parents to be sad when their kid(s) are going off to college. It is NOT normal for parents to be so verbal about being sad that it interferes with a kids future.
A full ride to UT is an amazing opportunity and I would not underestimate the value of the substantial and extensively strong alumni network. It will be very very valuable in the years to come. UT was recently ranked one of the top public schools in the nation and their engineering school draws kids in from all over the country.
If you were telling us you would incur significant debt from going to UT then I would be inclined to say stay and go to U of H. But this is a matter of you getting out of your comfort zone and leaving your mom.
I think you are having some normal last minute anxiety and concerns that every student faces. Going three hours to school is NOT going somewhere dramatic…that is a very very reasonable distance and you could theoretically go home at least once a month.
As far as students being snobby…UT is going to definitely have students like that. But UT is also going to have lots of every other type as well. You will definitely find your people if you make the effort.
Of course, we don’t know you and we don’t know your situation so take this all with a grain of salt. But don’t blow an amazing opportunity because you are scared of change and scared of going out of your comfort zone.
