UT vs UH for Chemical Engineering

Asking for a fellow CC-er because he’s sort of miffed about being reported, haha.

Said CC-er has been admitted to both UT and UH and is planning on majoring in/having a career in Chemical Engineering. Here is the dilemma…

UH: He just received a full-ride scholarship. He lives in Houston, so he probably won’t get as much of a “college experience” going there. He also said UH is “ratchet” in his opinion and definitely prefers UT. He also really liked ATX.

UT: UT is ranked in the top ten for ChemE… UH is not even close in prestige. I believe he got a prestigious scholarship? He also got into EHP. His parents will pay for the first two years, and he will be left with $40k debt by graduation. He’s considering taking out a Parent Plus loan.

He’s basically not sure if the $40k debt is worth it. He wants to get an MBA in the future and has heard that it’ll be easier to get into a good grad school with a UT undergrad degree. He also knows that getting a job out of Texas will be harder with a UH degree.

Suggestions? Advice?

I would tell him to go to UT. College is so much more than academics. It’s also about finding yourself and growing as an individual. UH probably couldn’t do that for him but UT could

I think that’s great advice. I thoroughly agree

I disagree. College is not about finding yourself. It is about making yourself alot more “in demand” or “marketable” . That being said… ut will surely help you make get a better job in the future.
