I've been accepted at PrattMWP and considering it strongly. I'd like to know if Utica is a safe place to go. I'm an international students and some students have told me that there are some safety issues.

Can anyone throw some light onto this matter?

Utica has the usual crime issues that come with any small city, but I would not call it unsafe. Are you from a metropolitan area? It depends on what your barometer for safety is I suppose.

@planner03 I was raised in India in a small town in the North-East. I moved to New Delhi for my Junior and Senior year of high school which has a pretty good crime rate I think.

If possible do you have any idea how bad is it from Delhi, India?

Have you been to Utica or are you from somewhere nearby?

I don’t think that safety is really a concern at all. MWP is a very small school as I am sure you know, and Utica is a small city. I wouldn’t factor safety into your decision process. I would focus more on whether the college size is acceptable. Keep in mind that it is not a real college campus in the normal sense, and that Utica doesn’t have much in the way of entertainment for teens. Public transit is also not a big thing here, and buses are primarily used by those unable to afford cars. Since Utica has a refugee center, you will not stand out in the least in the city as an international though.
If you have any specific questions, let me know and I will try to help.

@planner03 I don’t own a car and I don’t really want a social life outside college. I’m concern about entertainment though, but I can manage that for 2 year, I guess. But is there any place good to eat or just go to (needn’t be a mall or movies, but just parks or like)?

One of the students told me that she was about to be mugged, so safety came to my mind.

About 5-10 minutes away from Utica is New Hartford and there you will find a large movie theater with numerous stores and a mall. Utica recently welcomed a AHL hockey team to its city so about every Friday and Saturday night during the winter there is a hockey game to attend if you’re into hockey. Utica may not offer much in entertainment, but if you’re willing to travel about 5-20 minutes away you will find something going on every day of the week.
