everyone up in the northeastern neck of the woods is a guido in my book.
And heres my list of things texans care about in other states:

Anything south of Northern Virginia is south. Southern and central Virginia is certainly south. Probably more southern than many parts of North Carolina.

And, obviously not all northerners are guidos. If they are from New Jersey, yes that would be a good assumption. However, I wouldn't consider many people in D.C.-Maryland guidos. Nor would I call anyone in Ohio a guido. (Of course, I consider Ohio mid-western.)

Love to hear your definition of a Guido!

"The overwhelming majority of people in all ethnic and racial groups are fundamentally good and just as angered by racism as you. Find them, embrace them and work to make not just your school life but also theirs a great learning and social experience."

I like Padre's response above. OP your question and concern seems reasonable to me and noone should make you feel guilty for inquiring. Rather than call the OP names, I would hope that we could be open with each other about the realities that still exist and are challenges, while at the same time encouraging each other to find the best in each other. My d's best friend will be going to Vandy this fall (she is biracial) and she is so excited...

As a Baltimorean, my definition of a guido would basically be anyone from the state of New Jersey.

lol. I'm just joking with you.

For anyone afraid of going to Rice just because you're is a minority, don't be. I've been to the Rice campus several times, and it's amazing.

I live in Houston, Texas, and I'll admit that some people here are racist, but it's not as prevalent as you may think. Don't let that force you to pass up great schools like Rice and Vanderbilt (:

And I speak for Tennessee when I'm talking about Vandy, of course, haha. Not Texas.

Houston must be the butt of at least a quarter of the gay jokes I’ve heard, and isn’t Rice incredibly diverse?

I’m not sure why a minority would ever be worried about going there. What schools ARE “acceptable”?

lol bmorechil,

i live in NJ and the guido population in my school has increased noticeably in my 4 years of hs :P

It’s science. New Jersey breeds guidos.

I think we have to clarify this south thing. Technically, anything from Virginia south is southern. Texas included(confederate states.) However, Virginia, NC, Florida and Tennessee have become increasingly northern over the past years. Virginia, Tennessee and NC have become increasingly liberal. True Floridians are as southern as ever but the state as a whole has become liberal because Florida is Americas death bed. old “yankees” move down there to die. the “true” southern states are Bama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the birthplace of the confederacy, South Carolina.

It’s a saying in FL that the further south you go, the further north you get :)

But let’s return to the OP’s original question, shall we?

“True Floridians are as southern as ever but the state as a whole has become liberal because Florida is Americas death bed. old “yankees” move down there to die.”

This is so true. Most people where I live (SW Florida… near Sarasota) are old people. Driving is so annoying. They are so oblivious. I’m not against people driving the speed limit, but please, do it in the right lane please. kthanks. =]

Anyway, to get to the original topic. I don’t think Vanderbilt is racist. It’s probably more segregated in cliques than many other schools, but it is in the south, which still has a bit of catching up to do. But I’m assuming as Vandy gets more attention and a more diverse applicant pool, there will be a bigger percentage of kids with open minds attending, making the prejudice go away.

im an ethnic minority and an international student at vanderbilt and the school is not racist at all! people are very friendly and as long as you are friendly and make the effort back, there will be no problems

Hate Crime??? Do you honestly think that is going to happen at one of the best schools in the country? At Vandy people are judged on their merits, and yes, people do tend to stick to their own as is the case anytime you get a large, diverse group of human beings in one place.

Actually, now I think about it, I havent gone out lynching in a while, better go and get the old rope from the trunk, then if I’m feeling good I’m gonna makeout with my sister…

For God’s sake grow up

BritishVandyGuy, the question is legitimate. Hate crimes can happen anywhere (including “at one of the best schools in the country”). I think the sentiment expressed in earlier posts is that hate crimes are no more likely to happen at Vandy than they are anywhere else.

I do smell a ■■■■■, though …

My dear lady, I do assure you I am not a ■■■■■, I simply expressed my opinion. The nature of the question made it sound like we all walk round the yard with our backs to the wall, a sentiment I resent that panders to outdated and foolish southern stereotypes.

I’m sorry, what’s a guido?
