Is withdrawing from a class significantly bad on my transcript?

So I just dropped a math class that I no longer need because I decided to switch majors. My transcript will indicate that I dropped during the 5th week of the quarter. Will this affect me when I apply for graduate school? I go to UCLA by the way.

Can someone please answer? I just want to know a clear answer. Thank you!

no

it depends on your schools’ policy

It really depends, to be honest I withdrew from a core major class 9th week (I go to UCLA too). In my personal statement I provided a short paragraph explaining it.

I still got interviews and they did bring it up during the interview for me to explain further my situation but after explaining it they seemed very reasonable in overlooking it (I was accepted at the school that brought it up in the interview).

I didn’t get any Top-10 school interviews, but I don’t think that was the reason that affected it, it might just have been other factors/GPA/GRE being low.

P.S. Your situation is a lot better because it’s for a major you switched and did not need anymore. I would indicate this in your personal statement. I am 100% sure they will overlook it because of that. Good luck!

I wouldn’t mention it in your SOP. I would consider it a non-issue. If they bring it up, sure, explain it, but I’d be surprised if this happened if the rest of your application is strong – there are more interesting topics to discuss.

thank you all!
