Is writing about music too cliche?

The essay topic for a full-ride scholarship at a college I am applying to is as follows:

Writing, painting, performing, debating, and designing solutions to complex equations are only a few of the media through which people convey their thoughts, emotions, and aspirations. How do you express the inner workings of your mind to the larger world? How does the world around you respond?

I have played piano for over ten years, performed in musicals, operas, been in countless choirs (At school I am the president), etc. etc. etc, Long story short, music is my entire life. While I’m musically highly successful, and plan to major in it, I am worried that writing about “music” as my answer to this prompt is too tired and cliche of a response, though it is the truth. I know I must stand out to win this scholarship. Any thoughts?

It can work if you write about music from a unique angle.

Maybe think about some followup questions like:

  • []What are you expressing to the larger world through music?
    [
]What is your favorite type of musical expression; what about it captivates you and vibes with the way you think?
[]You say you’ve performed in a lot of structured things like scripted musicals, but what are you like when you’re just by yourself with your music?
    [
]Have there ever been any barriers between what you were trying to express and what people actually got out of it?
[]Has music ever expressed something to you?
    [
]Have your beliefs ever been changed or challenged by music or the way people respond?

Etc., etc.
