I attend a lot of protests/rallies/etc and I think it's just a big part of me. Most recently, I went to multiple protests about the non-indictment of Darren Wilson. I wrote two essays for the common app-- one about that, which I think is really strong, and one pretty decent one about intellectual curiosity or whatever, which I'd be okay with... but I like the protest one better. But if an essay about protests is too controversial, I'll use that one. I wanted CC's opinion first, though.

Oh, and I made sure it wasn't a lecture like "this is right, etc etc." I barely even talked about the subject of the protest. It was more like I talked about the community I found in people passionate about the same things as me. I just wanted to know if that'd still be too sensitive of a topic to write about.

Thanks!

Edit: And do you think that, considering the protests are happening in many places throughout the US, that it will be a common topic in this year's essays? I don't want to be one of a thousand students writing about the same thing.

My gut tells me that a lot of very BAD essays will be written about police violence this year. so not only could your essay get lost among the many hundreds or thousands, but you run the risk that readers will begin reading it with the assumption that it will be bad.

No topic is a bad topic, but like WasatchWriter said, it’s not a great time to pick this as a topic.
Nobody can judge how controversial or common your essay is without reading it.

Thanks. That’s my fear too.

Even if u “barely even talked about the subject of the protest” u still run the risk of offending an admissions reader who is on the other side of your issue. Believe it or not, a large percentage of Americans think Darren Wilson’s action were justified, and they don’t lose sleep over Ferguson, MO.

If it honestly changed your life then I say do it. I’m also writing about living and protesting in Ferguson and how it changed the course of my life, but I have also volunteered with numerous protest related non-profits in the area so hopefully my related activities will add substance to my essay. Either way just trust your gut!!
