Is writing an essay about an EC really such a good idea?

I lot of people seem to think its great way to explain your passion for an EC, etc. But doesn't that go down the trite road a bit? I don't know how would possible make an essay about your passion for helping the community sound new or interesting. I would think a life experience and/or some sort of insight into a students thought would be better

I want to be creative but I also don't want colleges thinking my essay is too nebulous

It is good to write about your EC, but not in the "usual" way (ie I was in the ________ Club and I loved it and I did this and that and blah blah yada yada) Try to fix and tweak it a little bit, and maybe say what you truly learned from it (try to avoid the "I think I should help the poor more" and such) Go deep and see what you REALLY learned.

True, personal experiences are a Plus, compared to writing an essay about your ECs

Just for the essay, think of it as introducing yourself to some random people (aka adcoms) They want to see reasons to accept you, and the essay is a great place to show your true personality.

In one admission book I read that they are sick to death of reading about:

depression

divorce

drug use

religious experiences

Without going into too much detail. What taking an ordinary/everyday type thing and using a device to reveal more about you thoughts/what makes you tick. Is it that a little too "out there"? I want to take risks but I also don't want them going what the hell is this
