Isn't ANYONE applying to college of Charleston?

At least as a safety? Why not?

This is not, unfortunately, a place where you will find lots of people applying to COC. The people here, as a general rule, have their eyes looking towards a handful of schools and any schools not on the "approved" list will not generally be aknowledged. COC, by the way, is a great place. Good luck!

Thanks. I figured since some are applying to big state schools, like UMICHIGAN, that it wasn't strictly a top 25 website. My daughter is applying from the Boston area and we have heard great things about it, but never visited. Have you seen it?

I have a friend who was accepted 2 or 3 days ago to the College of Charleston.

I would apply to CofC if not for its reputation. I'm from SC and have never even considered it because of the party atmosphere. Seriously, that's the only thing people think of around here when you mention CofC.

Oh, really? Because thats not the rep at all up in the northeast. Its viewed as a state school but with private school standards, beautiful area, great campus near the ocean, good education. How is it viewed nationally, do you know? I appreciate the feedback.

I would consider applying, maybe...but, no Jews down there...so...yeah.

www.campusdirt.com, a site where actual students are surveyed and the data is posted says:

ranked #49 out of all colleges in database for "social life"
students typically drink 3-5 nights a week
students typically party 3-5 nights a week
hook-ups are viewed as easy to get and are frequent

All of that aside, academics are similar to other state universities in SC. Price tag is similar to other state schools as well. The city/beach is a plus (I LOVE Charleston), but as a very serious academic type, I could never see myself there.

wow. That was really helpful. So the education is viewed as sub-standard? Not something I want to pay for, especially after 4 years of private high school tuition. She is applying to the honors college, maybe that will make a difference?

Don't know too much about the honors college--I've gotten some brochures in the mail, but that's about it. They generally proclaim the typical small classes, great city, etc. Avg. SAT is 1340, so I'm guessing there are some smart kids there. Personally, I prefer upstate colleges to lowerstate ones. I've been accepted to Presbyterian with a full ride, Winthrop, and USC-Columbia, and I'm waiting to hear from USC's Honors College and Furman.

thanks for the link! By the way, what do you mean by upstate vs lowerstate?

Heavenwood, that's not true about the Jews. According to Hillel.org, there are 700 Jewish students out of 9800 undergrads, and this number is expected to increase. Also, in my region, the school is becoming more popular as a destination, both for Jews and non-Jews.

Charleston is a beautiful city, and I understand that while 9800 students is not small, the school has a "small" feel.

We will probably take a look for my child. Good luck!

Heavenwood- There's a Hillel at CofC. Check out their website. In addition, theres a decent size jewish population and a few synagogues.
I decided not to apply because I heard that after first year, housing was expensive in Charleston.

Awesome dg- we posted at the same time.same subject

My daughter has friends (Jewish) at the College of Charleston. They love the school, think Charleston is amazing, are enjoying their classes and are having a wonderful time. I wish my child could apply there as a safety school, but they have no engineering.

SUNSHADOW - my gal applied to CofC and accepted pretty early - took 17 days from application to acceptance!!! - we had the opportunity to visit - of course during a hurricane tho LOL - missed our visit appointment :( they offer a wonderful tour/visit program - but..... they did at my request - leave us a walking tour and info in a special place for us to pick up whenever we got there. Admissions was awesome to us - and we were very impressed with how they 'handled' our situation. (we also have a friends daughter and a couple of others who attend/graduated from CofC - all from New England.)

CofC has some excellent programs and opportunities - seek and ye shall find! The housing is a little competitive - so be quick on the draw - tho there seems to be alot of off campus housing in the local area as well. It is easy to get from here to there - airport is very close by. All the folks we did get the chance to meet were great - friendly and very positive.

The stats that are posted above could be true of just about any school - I would not let that keep you from considering CofC at all. I do know that the kids I know there do have fairly good social l ives - they are also good students and have done some amazing things - DC internships - Semester at Sea - good acceptance to grad school etc.....

Charleston is a beautiful small city - has its not so nice sections like any city - but has some amazing places/things to do - it is a beautiful campus. All the kids I know there seem very happy and like it - so give it a chance - ya never know :) The only reason my gal didn't go there was she was accepted early to her 1st choice which had a snowboard team LOL - but CofC certainly was in her scopes - in the Honors program.

SUN - any idea what your student may consider to be majoring in??

that was really helpful, thanks! I was getting kind of bummed from the other posts, although I certainly respect the opinions of natives of that area as well. I think as long as I feel confident about the education in the Honors program, and since my daughter is a pretty serious student, I a not any more worried about the excessive partying than I would be at any school. I hear the city of Charleston is lovely, too.

700 / 9800...7%...a tad low IMO...but besides...I already have my safety...Pitt Honors...

SUN - the city of Charleston is geeeorgous - the school sits in the middle of the downtown area - very walking friendly - very historic and well taken care of. Your kiddo will not go wrong educationally/academically in the Honors program there - like I said - there are many opportunities for students there.

As far as any party atmosphere - you will find that just about ANYWHERE - personally I would not make the decision to not consider CofC based on that because that is a given no matter where one goes to school. My gal actually has been attending a major university - big big - well huge rep for being a party school and she has done fine - it just depends on ones personality and what one wants from the school they attend. The kids that I know that go to CofC have good social lives - are excellent students - but have not complained about the party atmosphere being a big problem for them.

One thing I kept in mind was that many times the natives may have a negative local opinion - just as I do of some New England state schools - not the best - and not negative of all - but for a student from another area that is not the case. I would have had absolutely NO problem had my gal chosen CofC to attend - being from New England and landing in another culture would have been just awesome for her - as it actually has been - as she is at another big southern/atlantic school.
