ISO: alternatives to Beats Dr. Dre headphones

well, the subject heading pretty much sums it up.... there are numerous threads here about recorders, but I haven't seen any about headphones.

Suggestions?

I know the Beats are popular, but we also know they have some drawbacks.

For what purpose? Mixing? Practicing? I can ask my audiophile what he likes. (Versus what he can afford…which are two different things, eg he uses Koss Studio pros because they’re inexpensive considering they’re guaranteed for life) In his case, he relies on monitors for a sound mix when possible but checks detail using headphones – you really need to do both. So, purpose will drive what kind of recommendations you get, I bet.

I agree that you need to decide the parameters you are operating in, headphones range in price and quality, it depends on what you are looking for. The Bose Quiet comfort headphones do a great job of noise cancelling and have excellent sound IMO, but are also very expensive.

My recommendation? Figure out how much you can spend, then go to an audio store and try them out (if they don’t allow that, walk out of the store) and figure out within your price range what works. You can also check out consumer reports and the audio websites to see what they recommend, and look on Amazon at reviews, but ultimately it is what you think of them that matters.

sorry folks - I’m not a user…

She anticipates using them in her dorm room, for listening to music (classic and jazz), doing music theory homework… She does not want buds (in the ear), she’s used on the ear, she hasn’t used any that fit over the ear.

She has used her friend’s Beats, and what she doesn’t like about them is that anyone around her can hear everything she’s hearing (ie, sound leakage)

Price-wise, equivalent of Beats.

Yes, I realize I need to get her into the store to try them out. I’m just trying to decrease the amount of time we’ll need to spend going from store to store, by having a list of a few headphones to focus on.

My son likes his Sennhiesers.

Both Ds like their Bose headphones, but their audionerd brother has issues with them. (Both the headphones and the sisters…)

bleed sucks. If you are talking in a dorm room, I would look at noise cancelling headphohes. My S says the Bose headphones have great sound and he is a pill with such things, but it comes down to what you like. I guarantee you they won’t bleed, and they do have great sound, but as I said they are pricey. Companies like Sony and others have noise cancelling headphones that cost a lot less, you may want to try them and from what I hear they have nice sound. The downside of the noise cancelling headphones is that if their battery goes they don’t work as headphones…

The Dr. Dre top end models seem to sell for the same as the Bose, around 300 bucks, so you would be in that range.

I used my dad’s Sony Noise Canceling Headphones for classical music listening / music theory class and found them to be great. I believe would cost a lot less than Beats too.
