Issue Essay Topic HELP

I need to write the Texas CommonApp Topic B essay which is as follows:

Choose an issue of importance to you—the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope—and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

Now my question is when picking a topic would it be better to find a odd non traditional issue and write about that, or is it better to write about a more traditional issue (global warming, poverty, censorship, etc.). I have an issue I'm thinking about that has to do with the internet but it is not a very focused issue do you thinks that is ok.

How focused should the issue be? Should my essay have many facts (of course with my own commentary)? Do I have to take a side to an issue or can I just qualify it?

Thanks for your time!
