When writing an essay on an "issue of importance," do adcoms want to read about specific issues (ex. lack of medical care in rural Africa) or general problems (ex. lack of willingness to give back in modern society)?

The point of the essays is to give the admissions committee a sense of what matters to you, and why you are an interesting person. You can interpret the question any way you like, provided what you say is thoughtful and cogent. Avoid just stringing together a bunch of cliches.
