IT Degree for Dummy

Recently my Full Time job has slowed down to give me some time to start thinking about school.

My interest is BBA, Political Science and IT. Political Science is pretty close to a dead end job, BBA I am still pondering but IT seems like the way to go for definte job placement. Problem is, I know nothing about computers (Networks, Programs, language....).

How hard will it be for me to suceed in classes? Won't they teach me everything I will need to know? I am sure being older than most students they will suceed at classes more easily than I and they probably know more about computers than I also.

What can help me learn more about IT, Networks....before I go to class, if I choose to go for IT or Computer Science (not so much interested in writing programs though)?

Thank You

Don’t go for Business Administration or Poli Sci. Both are pretty much worthless. If you want the business route, go economics or Finance. If you study hard in Comp. Sci, you can do well. I know a lot of people who knew did not know anything about Computers and they did well. You have to work harder, but it does not take a genius to learn computers or networking.

Thank you for your reply.

These are the 3 A.S. degrees that I am looking at. I believe the IT Degree is more of what I am looking for but for any clarification or help navigating through this would help. I would be transferring to U. of N. Florida or FSCof Jacksonville for the Bachelors.

I just don’t want to get in over my head.

Computer Science is NOT the same as Information Technology. You good with math? You good at organizing abstract ideas as logical steps? Then do CS.

Is it best, due to possible time contraints and money, to take some of these classes at a tech school? Im afraid that some of these may not be transferable to a 4 year college. But ultimatley, are employers looking at a degree when looking to hire, or certification and a focus on certain abilities of concentration, such as a Tech school would provide?

You have some options available. You can take the courses at a Community college. Many times, Community Colleges have agreements with State Universities which can then transfer over after you complete the 2 year program at the community college in whatever program you are pursuing. After transferring to a 4 year school, you will be considered a junior, where you will finish the core courses of your major. Sometimes the credits from Tech schools will transfer, mine did, but not all of the credits transferred.
