IT job vs. Engineering (marketability)

Hi all,

I recently just graduated as a double major with a BS in Computer Engineering and another BS in Electrical Engineering. I was offered a job which I took for a Fortune 500 company in the financial services industry. The job specifically is an IT job with a concentration in mainframe security.

My question is along the lines of IT vs Computer/Electrical Engineering. I am concerned with my future job outlook and I was hoping for some guidance. I was wondering if I am hurting my marketability by taking a job in IT over a specific engineering job. Don't get me wrong I am getting paid much higher then I expected upon graduation. (Great benefits, great company)

However, should I be worried that the decision will hurt me down the road if I need to look for an opportunity elsewhere? Will employers look down upon jumping from an IT job to an engineering job?

On the other hand, I look at my opportunity as a blessing. With the current state of the economy I am thankful for the opportunity that was handed to me, and I am thrilled to start my job for a great company. I mean 2-3 years of experience at a great company can;t hurt my resume.

So this basically comes down to am I hurting my marketability with 2-3 years of IT experience then if need be, jumping to engineering?

I am just looking for some opinions, I appreciate all your help.

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with IT. There is always going to be a demand for IT people that know what they’re doing and are working with the latest and greatest.

It may make it harder to get an engineering job down the road, if that is what you so desire, because you will most likely not have any directly related work experience. It won’t be impossible, but it could be more difficult.
