I had my mind set on a city campus but when i actually went on one (my dream school NYU) it was not as awesome as I thought it would be, and I felt rather uncomfortable in the big city. I visited 2 other city campuses near me (Boston university and Northeastern), BU was cool and they had a dance minor and I’m gonna apply but northeastern had nothing for dance. I went to Fordham rose hill and Umass Amherst and I did like both of their campuses and they both offered a ton of options for minors and majors, but they just didn’t really have great dance programs, unlike what the city schools DID. Now I’m kind of struggling. I guess I’m looking for the qualities of a good city school in a more suburban campus?
I have a 3.9 (its gonna be a 4.0) weighted gpa and 1330 SAT (currently but I plan to take it again) so I’m
not worried about not having a fair chance at getting into schools (except maybe ivy leagues lol) so I guess I’m just looking for options
I’m also very undecided right now so I guess that opens my options up a bit
I have like 4 things I’m looking for
Lots of options for majors (very undecided right now, although I’d prefer the sciences/something in entertainment? )
A good dance program with the option of pursing a minor (including commercial dance and maybeee ballroom ?) ********
GOOD FOOD (I know it sounds silly but I cannot and will not deal with bad/mediocre food)
Smaller school then what you’ve been looking at, but the consortiums with Haverford, Swarthmore and Univ of Penn might open up more options.
On the West Coast, not the east, USC has been putting a lot into their dance program. https://kaufman.usc.edu/
USC has a lot of double major and minor options for students and encourages this.
Have you asked about this in the Dance majors forum? Look for it inside the College Majors forum.
Towson University is in the Baltimore suburbs, has a very strong dance program, and lots of majors. It is not a tippy-top institution, just a decent state U, but could serve as an academic satety for you provided it is affordable for your family.
CWRU has a Single door admissions policy …so you can get in and not have to worry about initially declaring a major or being excluded from classes because you didn’t get into the business school, say.
SMU near dallas has one of the top dance programs and a ton of people double major outside the arts. Suburban but 5 miles from downtown, just need to be comfortable with going far from home.
@Squinty For Conn College, you have to show interest and interview. What type of dance for your main focus? My best friend went to Conn College for dance and loved it. Conn College would actually be a great central location for ballroom dancing. There is truly a vibrant competitive dance community in the tristate area. My son is a dancer and switch from Irish to Ballroom in college. It’s been a great experience.
Check out this months edition of Pointe Magazine. It has over a 100 dance major schools listed.
Butler and University of Utah seem to be the top. I was looking for my 9th grade ballet dancer. You said you were interested in commericial dance then you should check out NYU and Julliard.
But one of the kids in last year’s homeroom was a phenomenal dancer. She considered Montclair state in NJ, but ended up at Mulhenberg, where from all reports she’s thriving.
