It seems as if likely letters are becoming more popular

Does anyone else notice this? I feel like every thread I visit, Ivy League and not, someone is mentioning getting a likely letter. Maybe I’m noticing it more because I’m in the midst of the college application process myself (and naturally I spend more time here than I used to), but I feel like everywhere I go on CC, there’s talk of likely letters.

Also, out of the entire body of accepted students, how many people receive likely letters? I heard it hovers around 10%.

Remember that population here on CC does not accurately represent the entire applicant pool.

i commented about this on another post. I believe what you’re seeing is more commentary due to peoples’ knowledge and awareness of LLs. In terms of real numbers issued, my extensive area for my Ivy alma mater did not see any increase in LLs issued.

Everyone is anonymous on CC and some people lie, imagine that, lying on the internet!

I think all this talk of likely letters adds pressure to students. They feel as if they “have” to get one.

I agree with viphan. The CC population isn’t an accurate representation of all applicants. Most applicants on here have very high stats and kind of embody the go getter attitude that these prestigious schools look for. I doubt that there was an increase in likely letters.

@green678: In every comment about Likely Letters by non-HS students comes the phrase “You SHOULD NOT EXPECT ONE” – yet in direct opposite proportion, CC denizens feel the pressure even though it’s completely unwarranted.

Is this like people who deny global warming or fear vaccines?
