This. This is why I don’t have a car, but if I had the job to afford it I would absolutely charge a decent amount to people I don’t know. Other people probably charge less because their parents aren’t paying for insurance. I have a nice car sitting sadly in my driveway 200 miles away at home ever since my parents decided to pull the plug on insurance money. Sigh.

It’s inconvenient. I second the person who said get a boyfriend with a car (or a close friend or whatever). That was my solution. It has worked out great.

Wait, your father only works 45 minutes from your school and your home is 90 minutes away? Why don’t you ask him if he can take you shopping once in a while. If my kid was that close, I would be bringing homemade food a few times of month. He might be able to spare a couple of hours here and there and help you pick up groceries.

$10 is a steal. Obviously you have been sheltered from the true cost of car ownership. Yea, it is more than the gas cost… but it is still hundreds of dollars per month cheaper than car expenses. And it makes sense to me the compensate somebody that will go out of their way to help you.

What is so special about your school? Where are you that the cost of living is soooooo dirt cheap that $10 is a lot but $5 is perfectly reasonable?

Do you not realize that $10 is twice as much as $5??

As I’ve said – I’ve been getting rides since freshman year, and before last night, the most I’ve ever been asked to give in gas money is $5. This is why I think $10 is a lot. Because it is for my school.

Wow, you have some stingy friends. $10 for a ride to the grocery store?!? My friends with cars don’t even charge for rides to the airport 40 minutes away!

I don’t understand why everyone here seems to think that $10 is reasonable. Generally when you charge someone for gas money, the idea is that they pay you for the amount of gas that the trip used. If a 5-minute car trip requires $10 worth of gas, you probably might want to invest in a new car.

That being said, I’ve never owned a car (and have zero expectation of owning a car until I can pay for one) and I frequently just walk places. There’s usually an alternative route that doesn’t involve going along a highway. :)

No the OP does not have stingy friends. The OP has stated that his friends don’t charge. The person who asked for $10 was only a distant acquaintance. The OP clearly has no real clue about the costs of car ownership never mind the cost in lost study time of chauffeuring people around.

I wouldn’t pay $10 for a ride, either. I use other means of transportation. That doesn’t make $10 an exorbitant price for a car ride, when you consider the costs of car ownership. Has it occurred to you that the people giving you rides for less might not be recouping all of their costs?

It seems strange to me that the only route to a grocery store from your campus is on a freeway. I don’t know where you go to school so I can’t say any more than that.
