I once heard somewhere that Cornell has the highest suicide rate of any Ivy, is this true?

Maybe it has something to do with the isolation/difficulty of courses?

Anyone care to share thoughts on the topic?

maybe but i thought it was because of the accesibility(sp)(i.e. bridges over huge gorges)

Actually, Cornell's suicide rate is far below the national average.

first fraternity/alcohol related death was at cornell :D kids left their drunkard friend in the woods, sucka' fell into a gorge.

That is total BS, it's like a lil joke...like all of the ivies have their own little satirical role they play, so Cornell's is the place where students can't handle the pressure and therefore bite the dust. lol

But in actuality I am pretty sure there isn't a big difference between other schools' suicide rates and Cornell's.

lol, I wonder how they broke the news to his parents

Cornell's suicide rate is not that high ... but the gorges do make for news worthy suicides when they do happen

The way my tour guide told the story is that some news program did a special on college suicide and talked about Cornell, with the large population, high stress level, and huge gorges. Because the school was targeted, people assumed that it has a high suicide rate, but really it isn't that high

yup, they shot a suicide video in the 80's (i think) at cornell because cornell had a "gorges" campus ;-) but in reality, we do have lower rates than the other ivies (i believe).

ahh i hate that cornell has that reputation. that was the first thing my sister said when i said i was gonna apply to cornell. and i was like, ahh! that doesn't mean anything!! that's so annoying. cornell is an awesome place.

lol actually a student from HK just commited suicide over break this year. Saw it in the paper when I got back to Cornell. You can tell they were trying to keep the news quiet since the article in the paper was only like 2 paragraphs long and didn't explain anything. =

But yah, other then that it's been pretty good I think. Cornell is pretty much the same as any other Ivy and definitely less then MIT.

ABC did a story on campus around 1977 that specifically stated that Cornell's suicide rate was not higher than that of comparable schools.

They probably chose Cornell for the good visuals, and because of the urban legend that it had the highest suicide rate.

That said, there had been a real spike in the number of suicides that year.

Plus they executed our class of 198x grad who was a serial killer just the other day...

plus Cornell is just BIGGER than any Ivy - with more students, there are more possible suicides. a horrible way of looking at it lol

but you know, that is so great to hear, that it's mostly myth and gorge-related. Because last year when this kid got in ED, everyone immediately was like "Hey Jeremy, try not to kill yourself." The suicides never really fit in with MY picture of Cornell - the gorgeous campus and awesome people never really contributed to the idea that people here were suicidal - so I'm glad it's not as big an issue as everyone else thinks it is.

but lol NickyJane, i'd love to hear your other profiles of the Ivys' "roles"...because that was freakin funny
