@califilm, my D attended STN two years and although the convention is a great experience, if your child is a finalist for the Park Scholar, that opportunity far outweighs the trip to Orlando. My D loves the film school at Ithaca.

Thanks for the feedback IthacaGirl and Pa. I think we have decided to go ahead and apply and worry about the conflict if she is selected as a finalist. Could be a lot of worrying about nothing as I am sure the competition is stiff. I would agree that the chance at a free education would outweigh the STN convention, but she is the Production Manager for her school’s broadcast program this year and feels a strong obligation to try and keep their streak of awards alive.

Hi again everyone - it’s been almost a year since I began this thread (can’t believe it!). I was wondering how the room selection for sophomores went for everybody yesterday. My D had her room already - she went with one of the Living Communities, or whatever they call them, and was able to select it in March. But I wondered how everyone else did. Was it crazy on Homer Connect yesterday at 7am with rooms flying off the shelves at the speed of light like last year? (And incoming freshmen, you’ll get to experience the awesomeness that is room selection by lottery next week - may the Force be with you!)

Hope all your kids had a great first year and are ready to tackle year two, and best of luck to the incoming freshmen!

My sophomore DS lucked out and was able to get into a Circle Apartment for next year with 4 other sophomores back in Feb when the email came out about available Circle Aparments. His group responded within an hour of the email coming out. That freshman thing from last year was absolutely horrible (although I have to say we have been totally happy about everything else at Ithaca and my son loves it there). As horrible as it was last year it still ended up working out for the best. DS was put in temporary housing in a West Tower floor lounge with 2 other boys. They liked it so much and the floor liked them so much that they petitioned to remain there the 2nd semester even though there was room elsewhere (they didn’t give us the rebate for 2nd semester). DS will be living with these same 2 boys next year + another 2 friends.

As the parent of a prospective member of the class of 2019, does anyone have any updates on the freshman housing situation at Ithaca? I can see from the Residential Life page at the IC website that they’re still doing the lottery number assignments. Do they still have a shortage of FYRE housing? Have they ever uttered the word "hotel’ since the 2013 debacle? This is the first I’ve heard about the issue and it’s making me want to nudge my daughter to consider some of her other options. Thoughts?
Hi SpendingTooMuch (I hear you on that - especially with a student attending Ithaca, lol!). I started this thread two years ago and my daughter is now a sophomore who is very happy at Ithaca. They have never mentioned the “H” word again, thank goodness. D never had any problems registering for housing for this past year, nor any when she registered for the upcoming year. They have saved a LOT of dorms/rooms strictly for freshmen/FYRE (ALL of the upper and lower quads and the two towers), a greater number than when my daughter was a freshman. I still hate the way they do it with the lottery numbers and everything, and that system does cause a lot of stress, but everyone has been ending up with rooms, as far as I know. So I don’t anticipate your D will have any trouble getting a room, it just might not be her first or second choice dorm, depending on her lottery number.
Good luck to you and your daughter! As I said, my D loves Ithaca - it was a great choice for her.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I’m a tiny bit nervous about Ithaca for her because it’s a bit further from home than she initially had in mind (drivable in part of a day, but not within 2-3 hours, which was her initial preference). However, she got decent merit aid, LOVED the campus, and is enrolling in a health sciences program that isn’t offered very broadly. If the whole experience started out with an enormous negative like having to live in a hotel, it would really spoil something that she’s looking forward to but also a bit apprehensive about, since she’s not spent much time away from home and family before.
It is my understanding that they corrected this issue and it won’t be a problem again. My son is happy to join Ithaca in the fall!
