Ithaca

Lately I've been looking more and more in to Cornell as a possible choice, and it is a fantastic school. However, I was wondering just how much there really is to do in the city of Ithaca (obviously this includes the campus as well). I've been wanting to take up snowboarding, so I imagine that Cornell is close to some slopes. But other than the obvious snow-related activities, what is there really to do? While I love big cities, I can live without them (as I have all my life), but only if there is enough stuff to keep me occupied.

Ithaca is a good college town. There is a mall and a good downtown area with shops, coffee places etc. The town is college-friendly. There is a lot to do near the Cornell campus- restaurants etc. My understanding is that there is always a variety of things going on on campus- shows, sports, parties etc. I really like Ithaca.

Is Cornell the small and friendly town I'm used to, or is it a large intimidating college town.

are you still here??

Cornell is in Ithaca. It isn't real small- there are two good-sized schools there (Cornell and Ithaca). There isn't anything around Ithaca, though. I think it is a great college town, but it is remote. Gorgeous area.

If you're looking for big city activities, this isn't your place. However, there is always plenty of fun stuff to do and keep you entertained. (Jon Stewart!!!!)

Also, if you have a car, there's stuff around if you like to drive. You said you wanted to snowboard - a painful and worthwhile hobby - and Cornell's a short drive from Greek Peak ski resort. Cornell gets some big name performers every year, and lately Binghamton (1 hour away) has been getting A LOT of bands that are worth driving for. But in actual Ithaca? The town is bigger then it seems, and there's lots of outdoor activities and shopping and hippie college kid stuff...over all, it's a great place, and yes, it's remote, but it's not as cut off from civilization as some people make it out to be.

Granted, I don't go to Cornell (I'm looking at transferring), but I'm from Binghamton, so after of my childhood and teenage years have been spent hanging out in that town and the CU and IC campuses. It's definitely a fun place.

Greek Peak is supposed to be pretty hot. Cornell brings big entertainment in. The rolling stones played there back in the day, and kanye west and ludacris were there recently

Since I live very close to Ithaca, let me share my opinion. It is one of the best towns in the US. A majority of its population is made up of college students, so there is always something to do. The spring and fall are beautiful, and with all the waterfalls close by, there is always good trails to hike. Cayuga lake is great; swiming, sailing, and fishing. The town of Ithaca is filled with bars, cafes and history. So my advice is this: if Cornell accepts you, seriously consider it. It is a great place to spend four years of your life.
