It's all about RESIDENCE

I was wondering what people have to say about Solin. I am attracted to the apartment set-up and more independent style living, and although I wouldn't mind taking the metro to class, I'm worried that it'd be harder to go out at night. I wouldn't feel like paying for a taxi after the metro stops running, but what is the surrounding neighborhood like? Is there any nightlife in that area? Would anyone recommend any alternatives to Solin that are closer to campus? I've looked at Greenbriar but it doesn't look as nice...

I've been living in Solin this past year, and I totally love it. I don't know anyone here who doesn't, and some of my friends from other rezes even tranfered to live here second semester. You'll be SO happy not to have a meal plan after the first month (when all the other kids start complaining about the cafe food!) and you get to know the city more. Etc etc.

The neighborhood around the area has everything you could need (a few Deps, pharmacies, a grocery store, the gorgeous Atwater farmer's market, the Lachine canal bikepath, etc.) but it doesn't have much nightlife - for that you probably will want downtown. That's the only real issue with Solin, though most people don't find it too inconvenient. I know you said you don't want to pay for a taxi, but generally when you go out you'd probably have other kids from Solin with you, and if you all split the cost it's hardly anything. Or you can just stay with a friend who lives downtown easily.

Solin apartments tend to be VERY nice. Large, spacious, and well-kept. Greenbriar tends to be a bit sketchier. Some of the apartments aren't bad, others are literally falling apart. Also, at Solin you'd probably have your own bedroom, whereas Greenbriar tends to be doubles. However, if you want apartment style close to campus, it may be worth the tradeoff for you - that's personal preference! There's also the option of More housing, which is kind of like a cooperative (you get your own bedroom, but share the rest of the house).

Sorry, I feel like I didn't explain very much. Feel free to message me, or ask follow up questions on here - particularly about Solin, since that's the rez I know most about! Hope that helps a little.

hey..im also really interested in solin...but i was just wondering how much of the residents are freshman?...like in one apartement would you be put with only freshman?...and also...how does the laundry work?..lol

Almost everyone is all the residences are freshman - most students get apartments in the city after their first year. So, almost all other people in the building will be in the same boat as you (actually kind of helpful, because you can find people who share your classes to work with!). There are washing machines and dryers on each floor - you have to buy this card and put money onto it (all of which is in res) and then you insert that card into the machine. I think each machine costs about $1.25-$1.50 per wash.

Could you current Mcgill students tell me more about the upper rez? I heard it's more social as the room are small, people tend to hang out in the halls and common areas. I would love to hear more from the people of upper rez.

hey all, could you help me here?

I'm an international student who's applied to have an exchange at McGill's during the Fall term 2006, and I was wondering whether is it possible to get residence for a period of just one term, with me paying about 4 months worth of rent? (p.s. I'm considering Solin)

RE: Getting back to Solin in the middle of the night
You could also take the night bus on Rene Levesque. Lionel Groulx really isn't so far that you couldn't walk back from Crescent or anything.

RE: [naff] Upper Rez question
It is quite social because the single rooms are small so you tend to leave your door open whenever you're in your room. Hanging out in the halls and etc is quite common. It's generally more open than New Rez where the doors automatically swing shut (so you have to coat-hanger it open if you want, and even then the room's quite deep). I've lived in both Upper and New and had friends in MORE and Solin, and I'd have to say that it really depends on what you're looking for in Rez. The meal plans are a ***** and you'll be sick of them by November no matter whether you're in the RVC/Douglas/BMH mandatory meal plan or the New Rez/Campus deductible card plan. Places like MORE and Solin are quite a gamble because of the small number of people so if you have cool people it's REALLY good, but if you're stuck with bad people, it could be pretty bad. Personally I like MORE/Greenbriar because of the freedom from traditional rez rules but I know that some would rather not cook and just eat rez meals all the time and deal with larger rezes' constant middle-of-the-night fire alarms.

Exchange students can get rooms for just the term(s) that you're in Montreal. Contact the residence office.

thanks david! :)

there's an exchange student in my rez (douglas) who's been here since december from Mexico. He's having a blast and is heading back at the end of the semester, so it is possible to stay for a semester.

haha.. that's cool! Thanks for sharing MaxiJaz! I'm from Singapore, am still waiting for McGill's acceptance; my status has been "Ready for Review" since March 14th though.. is this common?

i just filled out the housing survey. i'm afraid i'm going to get a random residence i really don't want.. like my 12th choice or something :(

wad three adjectives did you put?

I have a couple of questions about Greenbriar. Is there a tight community there at all? Also, is it a pain cooking for yourself all the time or do you get used to it? I'm really leaning towards Greenbriar but I'm worried that it would be too isolated because not that many people live there.

i'm also looking at greenbriar - my question is - how easy is it to sublet an apartment for the summer?

Can someone tell me about the computer lab in Solin Hall?
I.e. the hours of its computer lab? The types of computer there? Can I hook my lap top up for internet access there?

can you move the furniture around in the rooms?
and how exactly is Molson Hall?
It wasn't one of my first choices...

I think you could probably move the furniture around, but my guess is that the way the furniture is set up is the way that leaves the most room in the room...uh, you know what i mean?

Yeah, thanks. Otherwise, I guess I'll see when I get there.

we moved our furniture around just because our room was set up like a hotel room and the beds were just too close to each other for comfort. you have to move them back for the inspection at the end of the year, but you can do whatever you want to the rooms while you're there. careful about smoking/weed because they have heavy fines if they catch you or smell something at the end of the year.
