Is there wireless internet access in these residences? How is internet access, in general? Thanks

No, most of campus has free wireless, but not the residences. Res has high-speed access, which works really well, but you have to pay about 32$/month for it (you have to apply for it, then you get one big bill for the full year sometime in the first few months).

a lot of people i know here use a router and share an internet connection among people on their floor in rez, the speed isn't compromised very much and its much cheaper.

It's true that some people use a reuter for wireless internet, but when too many people use it it starts to get slow. I use my neighbour's wireless connection when I'm doing stuff from my bed, but it's unreliable. The high speed is very reliable and there aren't bandwidth limits or anything so you can download as much as you want. There is wireless access in the main study room and the lobby at new rez, which is good because there are lots of couches down there and tables where you can study. There is also wireless all over campus.

UMMMmm
i was just wondering,
what if you have a roommate already in mind?
is it possible to choose your own roomate?

Yup, that's what I did. Here's the deal: you guys both have to be put in the residence lotto which decides what building you get put in (so make sure you both put down the same thing as your first and second choices). If you both get put in the same place/room size (for me, both my friend and I got Solin Single) then you can contact the Residence people and ask to be together, and they'll most likely be happy to accomodate. However, if you AREN'T put in the same res, you can't really do anything about it - at least not for two weeks until you're allowed to apply for a transfer. Sorry, I'm not sure if I explained that very clearly...

Hi,

Can I know the answers to the following questions..

1) Which is the most popular rez?
2) Which has the greatest sense of community?
3) Which is the party rez? (new rez or douglous)
4) Which double-room is the biggest?
5) Which has the best environment to study?

1) this question can't be answered as rez's are allocated by lottery. Every rez has its advantages and disadvantages.
2) I would personally say Douglas as it has the least amount of residents and the rooms are closer together with a very communal dining room and piano room.
3)Hard to say out of the two. In the end, all the rez's party at some point and it depends on the people allocated to the rez's.
4)Definately New Rez's. It's a hotel!
5) Opinion varies. But most people don't study in their rooms or in rez and usually go to the library to study for some peace and quiet.

I'm sorry for the ambigous answers but that's'just due to the nature of your questions.

1) It's true that it's allocated by lottery, but that's all chosen by how you prioritize your options - I'd say more kids ask for New Rez than any other, followed by the upper rezes. Solin and RVC are least common.
2)As far as upper rez goes, Douglas. But overall, Solin - living a bit off campus, taking the metro together, tons of potlucks since we cook for ourselves - there's a really strong community.
3)New Rez
4)New Rez - the rooms are really nice. It's also the only dorm that has a lot of doubles.
5)Hmm... not completely sure. RVC has a rep for being studious, but it's the all girls dorm. As MaxiJaz said, people often go to the study rooms or libraries, anyway.

Anyway, just another take on the questions :) Luckily, all of McGill's residences are pretty nice, and it's not hard to transfer if you REALLY dislike where you end up (but few people find they need to).

hi, i recently was accepted to mcgill and i'm about 99.99% sure i'm going to go there...and i've been debating back and forth about what residence to choose. the new rez is appealing for obvious reasons, but i'm veiry tempted by douglas. i love the building and i think its gorgeous, but i didn't get a chance to go inside when i visited. i also like the idea of a more traditional dorm experience. has anyone lived in douglas and can tell me a little bit more about it? i was kind of confused by the mcgill website in their description of the set up. also what's it like dealing with the shared bathrooms? if anyone could reply that'd be great!!

i've already written about how shared bathrooms are like in one of the threads, so definately check that out. Doug is nice and about $1000+ cheaper. It's nice because it isn't too populous so u do get to know almost everyone in the residence. The cafeteria is nice, small and in my opinion better than BMH (upper rez caf) because there are less mouths to feed so i guess they 'care' more. The room setup is good too as you normally (except for H house) have 3/4 rooms and a common room, instead of just a large single common room for the whole building like some rez's.

If you would like more info or pics of doug....pm me your e-mail address and I can send u them.

Big Dilemma! I can't decide between Doug & New Rez.....
Douglous vs New Rez

I'm torned between these two residences. Can't make a decision.
I have to say new rez is indeed tempting. Private bathroom, luxuries, hotel-like facilities, new, comfort.

On the other hand, douglous is much cheaper, not as populous and I'll get to know many people. Sense of community is there and seems like really warm and close environment. But, the furniture looks real old.

Can anyone (new rez people) tell me about the 'sense of community' in new rez? or to each individual at least? or if it exists at all? I do not want to spend my first year locked up and being antisocial.

The sense of community is definately not as strong in new rez. I live on floor fourteen, and there are some people I have never even met. There are 50 people on the floor. But at the same time, since there are so many people, you'll have no problem finding friends. New Rez is a good choice. As for which is more popular between New Rez and Douglas, I'll say this: for my choices I chose Douglas double first and New Rez double second and ended up in New Rez.

wth! Really?... I always taught people will be rushing for New Rez. I'd love a roomiee too. What about diversity in these both residences? I'm asian.

for douglas at least, i find that most people are fine if not better off without a roommate. As all the rooms as closeby, you meet people all the time, while getting a roommate can cause two negative effects, sticking with the roommate wherever you go eg dinner time in the cafeteria, or not getting along with the roommate at all and this makes living in your room uncomfortable. I recommend getting a single for doug.

Just wondering, in Douglas, how do the washrooms work out? Like how many people share each bathroom/are they co-ed usually?

which one is the most ACADEMIC rez? most nerdy most lib type rez??

I live on the same floor as Tmak- and for real, we got floor T-Shirts with everyone's name on the back, and I was like- uh who's that? haha
it's pretty funny actually but not that big a deal

oh and a girl in one of my classes was telling me that one weekend they found a homeless guy sleeping in one of the douglas bathrooms.
i found that pretty funny. it wasn't a big deal though, they just asked him to leave and he did

actually i was there when that happened as it was in my washroom. We had a big party that night and the homeless guy was there. Actualy the girl didn't ask him to leave as she was scared. Instead, in the morning she just complained to the don, but he had already left. Nothing big.
