My essay for #1 was very concrete and answered the question directly. It talked about a lot of personal growth / was very philosophical. It was also on the long side.

My essay for #4 was more abstract and indirect. It talked about my passion and way of viewing the world. It was on the short side. They both used a lot of subtle symbolism.

Curious, what did you guys write about? :) I'm afraid my essays were too strange...they both did answer the prompts thoroughly though.

Last year, it seemed like everyone was applying to Andover and SPS

On the topic: My daughter’s were somewhat light-hearted. I told her to let her teachers, ssats and grades speak to her intelligence and to show her personality in the essays…for Exeter anyway. I figure they’re up to their ears in profundity already. My son’s joke when he was home and saw a random mess my younger one had left in the living room was that he was going to take a photo of it, bring it back to Exeter, and see how long it took for someone to relate it to WWII.

Ha ha Pulsar, but that could actually work. I can envision a really effective essay along those lines. If anything, it would show fearlessness. I kind of hope you’re not kidding.

Unfortunately, I was kidding. I got this idea just this evening after I sent in my app this morning. I’m kicking myself now literally, and I hope Exeter doors are not shut. But my essays were still good though.
