IU Freshman Move in Time

My son is starting at KLLC and they have an orientation that starts on august 14 but I was wondering if anyone knows if there are things for parents to do during that period or is it best just to drop off your kid and only stay one night there? I live in DC.

Since you’re coming from far away, make a trip out of it. Drop the kid off the 14th – it will be a zoo. On the afternoon of the 15th their first year stuff starts, so they’ll be busy. Say goodbye and bolt. Spend a night or two in B-town. Maybe check Lake Monroe (fourwinds). Maybe Brown county (brown county inn). Hotels may be tight and expensive in B-town. If your city types, head up to Indy or Cincinnati.

My D was an early move in for her Inspire LLC last fall. Not sure if Kelly is similar but we dropped her off in the morning and then spent a few hours helping get her room set up but by that afternoon, they actually had some planned events so we were heading back home right after lunch on move in day.

Even if we had hung around, she already had events planned as part of her LLC and wouldn’t have seen her. Since her LLC move in was a few days ahead of regular freshman move in day it was not a zoo for us. In fact I pulled right up to her dorm door, signed out a cart and in two trips had all her stuff to her room. Then I went and parked the car. It was the easiest move in I had ever experienced. Now a few days later when the regular freshman moved in was a zoo from what we heard.

Those first few days for my D with her LLC really helped her transition. They did a lot of bonding in just that short amount of time and we would have been a distraction had we stayed around too much.

Spending a night in B-town isn’t a bad idea even if you don’t get to see your son. Gives you a chance to check out the local scene, or head back up to Indy and explore downtown.

Drop the kid and go home…let them be on their own.
