I was wondering if anyone on here knows anything about IU's grading policy. Are students graded according to a bell curve? Is there any grade inflation/deflation? I remember reading something about 2.6 being the average GPA in most colleges though I don't have any proof to verify this. Most IU scholarships require that you maintain at least a 3.0 average so this may affect quite a few of us on here.

I know this question is going to differ from person to person, but on average how hard is the work at IU? Is a 3.5+ feasible without having to stuff your face in books all day?

I don't have the answers, but I wanted to throw in a question as well. Does IU grade on the +/- system? Does anyone have a breakdown of what grades translate to, GPA-wise?

IU does have +/- grades, but I'm not sure how they translate into GPA. My son was fortunate enough (Yes, fortunate IS the right word, in his case.) to receive a 4.0 his first semester. He had one A+, but no - grades. This semester is likely to be a different story, so I could probably tell you more after that.

Since my son's classes are mostly music, I can't really say how hard it is to get a good grade in general university classes. However, my son did get an A in Intensive German (a year's worth in one semester) without a lot of studying, and he says his English composition class is not too hard, just a bit picky. A matter of figuring out what things the teacher wants in their writing. I think any student who had a good GPA in high school could keep a good one at IU without having to work night and day.
