For those of you who attended one of the first two IU Office of Scholarships Game Day events this year, do you have any tips? We're going for the 11/10 IU vs UW game. D is bringing a friend, so will H & I be able to participate in anything? Or are we better off dropping of D & friend and having them walk to wherever they meet? Any "insider" tips on driving around campus and parking on a busy game day? We are staying in Indianapolis Friday night and driving to Bloomington Saturday morning. Event starts at 10:30 for noon game. H & I are planning to see a movie during the game :)

I am also going to the game. I was told only one guest will be allowed for tailgate and game.

My dad and I already went to an IU game day earlier this year, so I’ll do my best to answer your questions and offer some tips.

The Game Day tailgate, as you may know, offers food, drinks, and lots of free stuff (i.e. sunglasses, a drink tumbler, a shirt, etc.). If you want to bring a friend, the additional tickets (any after the first 2) will need to be purchased at the stadium. I’m not sure if extra guests are allowed into the tailgate, but e-mailing the scholarship game day people could not hurt.

For parking, my dad and I parked at my sister’s sorority, but the main tip I would impart is either park far away (it’s faster to walk than drive right after the game) or leave with some time left and HUSTLE out. If you’re going to stay around all day after the game, a good place to find food is on 4th Street.

Good luck, enjoy the game, and go Hoosiers!

ConnMon, thanks for the info. Is the tailgate area actually inside the stadium? We (parents) don’t want game tix or free food or swag, I was just hoping to get a chance to talk to some of the nice folks at the tailgate. But it sounds like we’d be better off dropping off D and friend somewhere near the stadium and then leaving until pick-up time. Do you agree?
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good pick-up location after the game? Somewhere away from the crowds but not too far to walk? I might encourage D & friend to leave the game early. They’re not big football fans (yet) but I don’t want to pull them away if they’re having fun or getting good info!

I received an email with this link for the game…this might help you out
[IU vs. Wisconsin Game Day: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington](http://scholarships.indiana.edu/wisconsingameday/)

We are season ticket holders, and have attended Game Day events with both kids.

The event is not technically in the stadium and you can get in without a ticket, but you would need to park. You might be able to find parking at the Union, but that’s not certain as the parking there is often full on game days. Fans staying at the hotel there, etc. I would suggest sending your student with your questions. I know it’s not the same, but you really don’t want to deal with the stadium traffic unless you are actually going to the game. It’s not horrible, but it’s not fun either.

I would strongly recommend you drop the students off at 17th and College. They can walk over to the stadium from there. There is a gas station on the corner there you could pull into or a few street parking spaces just south of 17th you could use while you let them out. You don’t want to try traveling any further east as you will get into game day traffic.

BTW-don’t speed down 37 from Indianapolis. State police know there is an IU game and will be out in force that day.

During the actual game they will be on their own. After the meet and greet, food, and questions, invitees just go into the game-nothing really planned. You could ask them to leave with 5-10 minutes left in the game and avoid some traffic.

As for pick up, I would recommend asking them to meet you at the Wells Library parking lot or at the Union. I suspect the library area will not be as busy. The parking lot is at the backside of the building. It’s a walk, but it’s also one thousands of students do all the time for games, etc. If you plan to stay around post-game and have dinner, then I would recommend you and spouse go to the restaurant just before the game ends and have them meet you there. Any place downtown is walkable from the stadium.

I would second the speeding caution regarding 37…got a ticket driving home from IU visit with my son…hadn’t planned to write checks to the Bloomington area until Fall of 2013 :)

Thanks so much rrah and 3Triplet, that’s exactly the type of “insider information” I was looking for! I’m printing out rrah’s instructions now, and will make sure not to speed on 37. I’ll wait to support Bloomington until next fall :)
