Iu vs Mizzou

So i have been blessed to be accepted to IU Bloomington and Mizzou. As an economics major, which school is better? Price is a factor as well as student life.

What is the difference in cost?

Mizzou: 38k
Iu:47k

What’s your parents’ budget?
Are you instate at either one?
Did you apply elsewhere?

That is a lot for either university and they are both obviously oos for you. You should also look at travel costs to both places. I don’t know much about Mizzout, economics at IU is good - it is ranked higher in some of their graduate programs for economics than for undergrad.

Are you eligible for merit money from either school? I’m not familiar with the Economics programs at either school, but for Business IU Bloomington is well respected and highly ranked. Better than Mizzou. Mizzou is more well known for their Journalism, and you never hear much about their other programs. There is a big price difference between the two if you figure the cost difference over 4 years. My high school senior is going through a similar dilemma. Accepted to both IU Bloomington and Mizzou. Mizzou is giving him 10K per year, and IU only 7K per year. I do think IU is the “better” school as far as rankings, at least for the business programs. But for us, cost is a factor so with the merit aid it would be 28K per year at Mizzou vs. 40K per year at IU. It’s just not worth it for us to pay the extra money for IU. Mizzou is still a good school and I don’t feel it’s worth another 48K over 4 years for IU. Sometimes it comes down to the student, not where the degree is from. We all know people with degrees from prestigious universities that are not extremely successful and people from lesser known schools that are very successful.

Im an Illinois resident
No merit money so far
I applied to DePaul, MSU, Iowa
Iu is 4hrs distance, mizzou is 6hrs distance, id probably use train travel

Is Iowa a state school (U of Iowa, or Iowa State) - those are probably your lowest cost options and both good schools. Have you visited any of the schools? What are you planning to do after 4 years of undergrad? Grad school or Work? If grad school you want to go where you can maximize your gpa and have research opportunities. If work then somewhere with a more pre-professional focus. If you are business oriented, it is very possibly to transfer to Kelley school of business with a good gpa.

I applied to university of iowa. I plan to go to law school.

You’re going to take on $100K in debt for law school. Why are you going OOS for undergrad?

The schools in-state are very expensive. I live in the state with the highest tuition rate in the country. IU and Mizzou are my cheapest colleges including ones in my state.

Mizzou costs $39K for an OOS student. UIUC is $35K for the most expensive program. SIU is <$30K.

This is true but I did not really have the grades for uiuc and had too good of grades for SIU My parents actually encourage me to go where I want.

Even if your parents encourage you to go wherever you want, you do need to take budget into consideration.
Between the two and without Honors invitation or special benefits, I’d go to the cheapest.
Have you visited and stayed overnight, attended classes, etc?

If you plan to be an economics major, you should run the numbers and you will conclude that going to an IS school for undergrad is the way to go.

My situation is DePaul is the only IS school I got into. Mizzou, in reality, is the cheapest tuitionwise.

Can you list, for each university, the following:
(tuition, fees, room, board) - (scholarships, grants) = ?
Do NOT count loans.
