IVC to UCI Bio major, possibly missing some pre-req's?

IIf you are gong to IVC why do you want to goto UCI soo badly. I am a currently attending UCI, it isn’t that great IMO, the experience is not really much different from CCC because I am commuting. My advice is to finish up all your pre-reqs at CC before you transfer, even if it takes 2 years.

@bomerr‌ I definitely can’t finish my prereqs in two years now because all of the summer chem 1b classes are now full, both at ivc and at saddleback. And taking a semesters worth of O chem next summer before I transfer seems like a really good way to kill my GPA and my social life. My high GPA is my greatest priority right now. I don’t want to mess it up just because I want to rush on over to UCI. And especially with all the posts about the math department… I’m more willing to stay at ivc for an extra year to complete at least calculus 1.
And also, I want to go to UCI for several reasons:

 1. it’s less than 10 minutes from my house, I’ll save on room and board
 2. it’s within the top 50 bio departments in the US
 3. I have some of my closest friends going there who are also majoring in bio (automatic study buddies  )
 4. I’m saving on tuition since it’s in-state (the only other schools I’m interested in are in Texas and possibly Arizona), which will help out in the long run for medical school. It’s very likely that I might have to go out of state for a medical program…might as well keep debt to a minimum for undergrad

@ntweeter, SIR is statement of intent to register basically meaning you are going to tell the school you got accepted into that you will be attended there. And try to sit in Chem 1B over the summer if you want. Even if the waitlist is full there is a good chance you’ll get in. Just attend the summer session and take notes to show the professor that you are committed and chances are that they will let you register. Even if they tell you the chances are low on the first day just keep attending and you’ll get in most of the time. Chem 1B wasn’t too bad its kind of like another math class so it depends on how good you are at problem solving. It is doable in the summer though.

@enferrari‌ I was going to do that, until I learned that only one class was going to be offered at IVC over the summer. And that one class was going to be taught by a teacher that is incredibly difficult to get an A in, let alone understand what’s going on in the class. The other two classes for chem 1B are at saddleback, but I really can’t afford to pay for the gas to drive there every day of summer for 8 weeks… I don’t have a job right now, but I’m currently trying to find one. Anyway, the point is, I will be definitely taking 1B in the fall over the course of a full 16 week semester where more professors and times are offered, and where it will be “easier” for me to attain an A in the class. But thank you for the advice. Who knows? I might get lucky next summer with a good teacher teaching chem 12B so that I can transfer in fall!

@ntweeter haha no worries yeah I took 1B with the harder professor and the only way I got an A was because I had AP Chem from high school. It sucks that it makes professors can make a huge difference. Hopefully it works out for you. One thing I learned from high school is always go for the easy A. BTW, do you know if organic is offered at IVC? Like both semesters.

@enferrari‌ yeah I didn’t take AP Chem in high school… I just took honors and then switched into CP my second semester so I could get an easier A hahaha (I still remember most of the stuff though, so my teacher must have done something right… Especially since her class kind of re-inspired me to pursue a science oriented career :stuck_out_tongue: )
Anyway, you were asking if IVC offers both semesters of O chem. The answer is yes, they do (Chem 12a and chem 12b)… However I’m not sure if they offer them during the summer semester. They probably offer 12a over summer but I’m not sure about 12b. I’ll look into that for you. Why do you ask though?

@ntweeter, dang haha I wanted to try to take it over the summer at a community college since its cheaper but UCR offers the full year so I’ll probably be going there for the summer sessions.

@ntweeter‌ i actually go to IVC too. and i took chem 1B last summer with mandir and hes teaching it this summer too… lemme just say, i do not recommend it at all. the class may be full now but by the end of the semester there was probably only like 10-15 people left. most people drop after the first test. he grades ridiculously hard/dumb to where almost everyone does horrible. like for example on my second exam, i lost 5 points cause my “K didnt look uppercase enough” according to him. luckly i already knew most of the info cause of AP chem but i barely managed to get an A. also there is no extra credit or anything, and he grades labs pretty arbitrarily as well. basically 1 or 2 people got A’s and the rest were lucky to get C’s. idk how good you are at chem, but i would not recommend him at all if you are a little shaky. go to saddleback instead.

@Bookham‌ yeah that’s exactly what I don’t want to put up with over this summer. I looked into him on rate my professor and as soon as I read like the first 4 or 5 reviews, I was just kinda like “yeah… nope, I’m just going to take this in the fall and stay an extra year.” I don’t care if some people might think that that’s a lazy or misguided decision… but I mean, I understand chemistry for the most part (like we just finished a few chapters regarding vsepr theory, electron config’s, molecular orbital theory and also hybridizarion, etc. and I understood about 90% of the material…) so the fact that you took AP chem and barely managed to get an A with Mandir is like a major major majorrrrr red flag and deterrent for me. And I’m not sure if you read previous comments, but I just can’t afford the gas for going back and forth from Saddleback 4 days out of the week times 8 weeks… because I live like 5 minutes away from UCI. thank you for the input though!! I’m actually really glad you told me your experience with him over summer and it just reinforces my decision all that much more :)

@enferrari‌ UCR OFFERS THE FULL YEAR OF O-CHEM IN A SINGLE SUMMER SEMESTER??? WHAT!!! that literally sounds insane and like a C or D grade just waiting to happen
