Funny story:
Harvard only sends to minorities.
I know a bunch of 'white' friends (and myself) who all got 220+ on the PSAT....no Harvard.
Any URM student at my school with a 170+ got from Harvard.
How obnoxious can Harvard get....."white students: we're really not all that interested in you."

Don't write your email address next time. It's basically advertisements that advertises false hopes. They'll either be "Come to our great, majestic college...ok, the catch here is that you need a 5.0+ GPA..." or "We are a really good college. Anyone can join...if you don't mind learning with idiots."

I jam all of those in my SPAM box. : )

I think it's cause Harvard wants more minorities to apply, so more can be potentially accepted/by planted with the false hope that they can get in slightly easier, meaning they'll apply when they wouldn't have before.

Well, yeah. More colleges wants to make sure they have a diverse collection of races from each corner of the world. A bunch of random colleges mailed me crap because I was asian ( I feel sooo special : ) )

Damnit. Why is it that other people get CMU mail? I put down CS as an interest and got a 210... Yet I only get mail from top-rate LACs and second-rate tech schools.

I think I'm gonna go bum them up for a pretty viewbook. I need more for my collection.

Dude... Murasaki... you keep track?

I remember certain ones cause they're prestigious.

im asian. did horribly on the PSATs. they probably just are interested...cuz no, i didnt get any mail from selective colleges. and like i said, im a minority.

Asian are not URM's (under-represented minorities) at the elite colleges. For admissions, only blacks, hispanics, and native americans get a bump. Asians are an over-represented minority.

Dunno about the white thing for Harvard--I definitely remember getting their letter (and throwing it away ;) ) after I took the PSAT. I'm pretty sure I marked the race box (I'm white), and my score wasn't so awesome (2140: 80/77/57, ouuuch for math).

it's so unfair Asians are URMs... I mean, we work hard for our accomplishments, we should be treated just like all the other non-whites

and I got a 228 on PSATs and 2200 on SATs....
Geez Princeton - JUST SEND ME A LETTER ALREADY!

I don't think that not being white is really the point. :)

They give a bump to blacks, hispanics and native americans because those groups are under represented on the campus, and they want to have diversity for societal reasons. It isn't just because they don't have lighter skin.

To the OP, I think everybody that scores above a certain score on the PSAT gets the mail. I've been getting mail from various colleges, from my local community college to MIT, and I'm sure many others do as well.

Now the problem is disposing of them....

Silly, that's what fires are for!

save trees!
recycle instead!

Gotta love how some of them are on special paper, some that aren't even recycable. Nice tactic to make sure their message gets considered before the student makes the mistake to recycle good paper and give the recycling plants a hard time.

Well, all I can say is...it kinda sucks to be white. I get stuff from MIT and Carnegie Mellon, and I'm stupid. I should be getting stuff from cheap colleges. My friends don't get much from them (and they're smarter)

You think it sucks being white? Try being white, Jewish, and from Long Island, NY.

^you guys are complaining about being WHITE?! Stop with the self-pity and get over yourselves.

I was confused because I haven't been getting anything from Brown, Yale, Harvard, etc. - the most selective schools - while my friends have been... and I had a much higher score than they did (236). One who got something from Brown is African-American, but another checked the "other" box. Do colleges count "other" as a minority? I've been wondering about this, though, believe me, I haven't been losing sleep over it. I'm so sick of getting all this crap from schools I have no interest in.

People only usually receive this sort of mail if they're 3/4 Native American, 1/19 Ethiopian, and 2/23 South African. Therefore, you should consider yourself excessively fortunate.
