i've been wanting to ask all along...

...what nad how is GPA calculated? what does those numbers mean? i see this bunch of numbers on Wolverine ACcess that kinda makes little sense to me (MHP, CTP, MSP, etc). the only things i understand are alphabets. :D

Go to view grades in wolverine access, then click help.

MSH Michigan Semester Hours (MSH). Displays the total credits for classes that have been graded and count toward your grade point average.
CTP Credits Toward Program (CTP) – Displays the total credits earned for classes that have been completed successfully, including transfer credits.
MHP
Michigan Honor Points (MHP) – Displays the total grade points earned for classes that have been graded and count toward your grade point average.
REP
Repetition (REP) – Displays if a class counts towards the GPA, but the student does not earn credits for it.
NFC
Not For Credit (NFC) – Displays if a class does not count towards the student’s GPA and no credits are earned for it.

thanks dilksy. very helpful :) but what do the numbers mean? as in, how do i interpret 3.792 in cumulative gpa? when classes mention that "this section's exams are not cumulative", what does it mean?

Cumulative means everything all together. So for cumulative GPA, that is basically what your average grade is over every class you've taken. If this is your first semester at umich, then your cumulative GPA will be the same as your semester GPA.

The GPA scale is like A=4.0, A-=3.6, B+=3.3, B=3.0...etc. Your GPA is a weighted average of your grade over all classes. So if you got an A in a 2 credit class and a B in a 4 credit class, then you'd have

MSH=6 (6 total credits taken at umich)
MHP=20.000 (4.0x2 for the first class, plus 3.0*4 for the second class)
GPA=3.33 (MHP/MSH)

As far as classes, a final exam being cumulative means it covers all the material for the entire semester. A final being not cumulative means the final will only cover part of the stuff done during the semester (usually everything since the last midterm).

what is considered a 'good' GPA? or rather, what is the mean GPA of the, say, top 10% of graduating class?

Apparently a 3.65 puts you in the top 15% of juniors/seniors, that's about all I know.

Highest Distinction: 3.917 - 4.000
High Distinction: 3.794 - 3.916
Distinction: 3.621 - 3.793

That's from the LSA bulletin. The various distinctions are for the graduating class...Highest Distinction is top 3%, High Distinction is 3-10%, and Distinction is 10-25%.

KB

wow these numbers are attainable? :(

My friend has made it through 3 semesters with only one A- in a 3 credit class. The other 50ish credits have been A's or A+'s.
