I've made a lot of mistakes...

I’m entering my 5th semester. My 1 first was a complete success. Passed all my classes with A’s and B’s. 2nd-4th semester things got ugly. I dropped half of my classes going from full time to part time. I was going through difficult period that lasted longer than it should have. Family problems, relationship problems, and also depression plus the loss of motivation. Currently I have a record of 8 withdraws and 1 D with a GPA of 2.5 now. My 2nd semester I wasn’t told of the drop deadline and dropped past said dead line and took a death blow that lowered my 3.4 GPA to a 2.8 and that D my 2nd semester lowered me to a 2.6. Life got in my way. I had 3 professor that honestly clupmd tteach and one of them would constantly rant about how their wife was a druggy and left them and how there life sucked. No idea what to major in and no clue on how to fix my life. I let it all get the best of me. But I’m trying. I need to know of there’s anyone out there. That can at least relate and instruct me on what to do. I’ve jumped from Accounting, to Law enforcement, and now I’m on the path to Fine Arts. Maybe if possible art teacher. By now if I stayed in those earlier majors i would have been done with at least an associates but since I have decided on Fine Arts i have to start all over again because almost all of my classes don’t transfer over to the new major. Should I continue my education or focus on a certificate?? I love school I love the new knowledge and I love the excitement I get from tests. But i don’t know if I’ve wasted to much of time already and if I even get my associates will I even have a chance to transfer for that bachelor’s?? With such a Transcript I feel that I’m done for. Opinions. Hope? Negative comments?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Don’t worry about the time that has passed. Take the break you need, speak to your school about a medical leave for a semester, spend time healing, work part time.

Once you’ve regrouped, you can always go back. But if you’re not ready to declare a major and your grades are a mess, it might be time to step back. Don’t beat yourself up for time “wasted”…you still have plenty of time to get a degree!

And please, seek out a really good counselor to help you. Start with your school’s counseling center and go from there.

There is always hope.

Investigate if your college has a “grade forgiveness” policy that you can take advantage of. That might help get your GPA back to a better place.

How many credits have you actually earned? Are you currently at a Community College?

Thank you I guess you have a point. I’m glad someone finally responded  Glad to know I’m not alone in this big wide world. I’ll contact a counselor as soon as possible.

“I’m glad someone finally responded.” ?? You posted at 2 am, and someone answered at 6:30 am. I’d say that’s a pretty good response!

Grade forgiveness? I never heard of such a thing. I’ll check but what is that. I have earned about 48 credits and yes I am in community college which I know makes my transcripts look worse

not all schools remove grades from transcript but if you retake a course then only the highest grade is calculated in your GPA. Say you got a D in a class but retook it and got a B. both grades will be on the transcript but only the B will be calculated in your GPA. I’m sure there’s people who’ve had it worse because it sounds like even though you haven’t had your GPA where you want it to be that you’ve never been on academic probation or been suspended due to a GPA bellow a 2.0. Be proud that you were smart to withdrawl from or drop most courses before things went south. Someone commented on one of my threads saying he failed algebra four times (this was pre-algebra and not algebra 1, intermediate algebra, or college algebra), took a break from school with a 1.2 GPA, then came back and did well in everything with a 3.9 GPA before transferring (he must of retook the courses he did poorly in to remove the bad grades from his GPA to get it that good), and is now at UCLA studying electrical engineering. I’m amazed about this.

I’m going into my third semster of college and I didn’t do as well as I wanted too either but have great confidence that I will get better and that some state university will accept me. I had a 2.2 GPA my first semester because I got a D in a class but retook it and got a B. Only the B is calculated in my GPA now. I also withdrawled from a course. my failures first semester were due to illness, loosing a family member, and being irresponsible by working too many hours at my Job. I’ve talked to many other people who also screwed up and ended up transfering to some school. It might not of been Harvard or Stanford that they transfered to but their degree at there state school made them have a good Job after graduation.

@NoFuture2020 - It can be called different things like “academic renewal”. Each school’s policy will be different but it generally allows you to retake the class for a better grade. Typically, your transcript will indicate you’ve taken it twice and have used the policy. But your old grade will be removed from your GPA and replaced with the new. Look it up in your handbook or make an appointment with your academic advisor.

And just general advice. Take it slow if you need to. I’d rather you do that, than overload yourself while you are getting back on track, and then later have to withdraw. Too many W’s can be red flags on a transfer application. Make sure you are taking advantage of all resources available to you at your college (tutoring, counseling, professor office hours, etc). Make sure YOU know the deadlines. You are an adult now and shouldn’t expect someone to be feeding you the drop, withdraw dates.

Good luck. You can do it!

Is there a group of class where you have done well? Any particular subject?
