Is this a suitable college essay topic? I got this necklace from girl scouts when i was 8 and i’ve worn it pretty much everyday since. Would it be too cliche to write about a memorable piece of jewelry/clothing item?
To me, it’s a unique topic. You have to figure out however how you want to craft the essay to say something unique about yourself and how it benefits your new school community. Do you want to communicate fidelity, commitment or something else? It would be good if you could reflect several aspects of yourself into your necklace to match what colleges are looking for such as: insatiable curiosity, love for diversity, creativity etc.
I love it and I think you can use it to tell your story! I think you can get very creative with this. I would also remove the idea now.
In no expert, but I probably click on less than 5% is the posts I see. The title intrigued me enough to check it out. I think if you can actually write about it, it will stand out, which is what you are looking for
Like the infamous Costco essay, you can write about anything. It’s how you write about it that counts. Be careful to ensure that it is multi-dimensional and an interesting, fun read. Be careful it doesn’t become mundane with only 1 theme, or worse prosaic or ordinary.
Here’s my question: does it tell us about you as an 8 year old, or about you as an 18 year old? Can the meaning you attach to this necklace tell the reader about YOU, NOW?? If so, then it sounds like it could be a solid essay.

If you can somehow connect it to the prompt at hand, your aspirations/goals, or other aspects of you, it can be a great essay. Make sure you don’t only write about the necklace.
