Has anyone had experience with an Ivy coach saying they couldn’t offer top level of support but would submit candidate info for preread? Coach did that, then came back and said Admissions Office came back w positive read, no guarantee of admissions but would give applicant "close consideration ". I’d love to hear if anyone else had this w their DD or DS and how it played out? Seems scary to rely on but it’s my child’s dream school
I feel like that’s what we hear often these days… admissions offices don’t want to guarantee admissions because let’s face it, “guarantee” is a very strong word and binding on their part. But if your child got a pre-read that was positive, that’s a very good thing. I would take it as “almost there” Different colleges use different terminology but close consideration means your child will receive bonus points.
But please discourage your child from locking in to the concept of a dream school.
Might want to find out from coach if he will also be considered for a likely letter, if not then he will be placed with the general admission pool and be given “support” by the coach.
Agree that without a likely letter it’s going to be a regular pool review with the coach as a potential tie breaker - that said, it doesn’t sound like the coach is that enamored at this point.
Coaches get a certain # of slots. If you were getting one, you would know. Ask the coach how many kids he has given this level of support to in the past, and how many got in. I’m guessing you will get an honest answer, and it could help you decide if you want to take a gamble on this or move on to a different school. My guess is less than 50%. But just have your child ask the coach. You might want to listen in, sometimes a 17 year old hears what they want to hear and not what a coach actually says. Good luck.
It doesn’t mean “almost there.” The coach hasnt put this student on the shortlist.
Something could change with the coach’s team prospects. But right now, the student doesn’t have that tip.
You don’t get an athlete likely letter unless both the adcoms and the coach are enthusiastic.
With the experience I had with my kid, coaches that were interested offered likely letters. It doesn’t sound like this coach is interested at this point, but may be hoping to keep your son in the mix in case one of his top recruits doesn’t accept his offerd likely letter.
Good luck!
