Ivy League JD or MBA admission chances

I’m currently a sophomore at a fairly small liberal arts school in the Eastern US. I am a Finance and Analytics major. My GPA is currently 3.854. I’m wondering, with good exam scores obviously, what everyone thinks my chances of getting into an Ivy would be?

I graduated high school with an Associate’s Degree from a community college, but my GPA was only 3.40. In addition to my GPA, I’m President of Investment Club, won the school’s investment challenge, will hopefully be an RA and Student Government VP of Finance next semester, and I am a member of FBLA and Pre-Law Society. I also am a member of a Finance Committee that handles over $250,000 for the college. I also volunteer quite a bit at local Elks Club breakfasts and sporting events for my community.

I have gotten the opportunity to meet and discuss my hopes of being an Investment Banker with a former executive at Lehman Brothers. I have a few contacts who work at large financial advisory companies, but not in NYC. I’m currently an intern for a United States Senator. I also have a contact who has friends at JP Morgan and she said she would be willing to help me out. I also hope to have another internship in NYC and if I get really lucky and ambitious to intern my senior year at the White House (which would probably make a big difference if it’s even possible).

Just curious, if I stay on this course, what people think my chances would be of getting into an Ivy. My favorites are Harvard, Columbia, UPenn and Cornell.

I went to Penn Law and had a much lower ug GPA than you have (< 3.0). (However, I had a stellar LSAT.) So your 3.85 alone should not handicap you.

I strongly advise you to explore other careers, though. There is not nearly enough legal work available for most graduates to pay off their students loans in a reasonable timeframe. Tuition alone has already passed $50k/year, the estimated total cost of attendance is around $80k/year. So you’re looking at a quarter million dollars of student loan debt for a J.D., with very poor prospects of finding a job that will let you pay that off.

P.s. your “favorites” are 4 of the 5 Ivy law schools; the only one you didn’t like is Yale, which is the most exclusive law school in the US.

Harvard: Aim for 173+
Columbia: Aim for 171+
UPenn: Aim for 170+
Cornell: Aim for 168+

A White House internship will likely make Yale a realistic option at 173+…
