Ivy League Music Programs

Look at Oberlin. If he is not interested in majoring in music but wants to continue to study, he might want to look at the University of Rochester where he can take lessons at Eastman.

Thanks-all great suggestions we will look into. He’s not sure yet about if he wants to major in music (performance or other), but he definitely wants a place where he can be challenged musically either way…

To put the question another way, is he interested in a BM degree at a conservatory/music school, or a BA degree at a college/university? With the emphasis on academic talent and interest in your post, I am thinking the latter, but making that clear will help you get more information, I think.

He is still only a sophomore, so this may not be clear yet. My daughter applied to both conservatories and college programs, and finally decided in late April of senior year. I think it helps to give him time to develop for another year or even two, and things will be clearer for him.

I can recommend a good book, that I recommend often on CC: “Creative Colleges,” which lists schools with good programs in music, visual art, dance, theater, and writing. I got it on Amazon.

I’m hoping things will clarify for him in the next year, but he may end up doing the same as your daughter (applying to both),so I’m trying to get get as much info as possible right now about all options. I will request that book from my library today-thanks!

Apply to both. DD changed her mind back and forth all the way until decision time in April senior year.
